Desperate Measures
Thankfully, as Tomio unlocked the villaâs front door Janetâs consciousness returned, in the form of a croaky stream of Italian that neither of us understood.
âAlmost there,â I murmured, turning her sideways so I didnât bash her head on the doorâs frame. âYou can sleep for as long as you want.â
âDoes that go for us too?â Tomio replied as he lowered his backpack to the floor and moved to open his bedroom door for me.
I found a wan smile for him as I carried Janet to the bed and waited as Tomio pulled back the light blanket. As I relinquished her weight to the mattress, she murmured something in Italian about the room being too loud and bright. Without opening her eyes, she rolled over and buried her head under the pillow.
To us, the room was neither loud nor bright.
Tomio went to his luggage and rummaged through what looked like a toiletries bag. He pulled out a small plastic packet with something orange inside, then returned to where Janet lay on the bed. She peered out from under the pillow to look at him when he nudged her hand and he held up the packet so she could see the fresh set of earplugs inside.
She nodded and murmured thank you in Italian four times as he opened it for her and put the soft plugs into her hand. As Janet muffled her hearing, I closed the interior scrim just behind the drapes, shutting out more daylight. I suspected she was asleep before Tomio and I had even closed the door.
âShould we call the polizia?â he whispered as we retreated to the kitchen.
I pulled two glasses from the cupboard and filled them with water, passing one to Tomio. âI think we should call Basil first. Heâll know what to do next. Because this is a crime by a supernatural against a natural, an agency will want to deal with it.â I paused before swallowing more water, wondering how the Agency was coping. âIf thereâs even someone available to take her case.â
I finally sent the text I had been about to send when Janet collapsed, asking Basil how soon we could talk to him. It was an hour earlier in London but late enough that heâd be up. Even if he wasnât, I had a duty to wake him. Heâd want to know about Janet as soon as possible. I took another gulp of water as we waited for his response. A glance at Tomio gave me pause. âWhatâs wrong? You look like you swallowed something nasty.â
âIt just occurred to me that Janet might not be able to see her family right away.â
I watched his expression drop a foot as he came to the same conclusion Iâd come to while still underground. âWhile Nero is free, she wonât be safe, and neither will her family if she returns home to be with them.â
Tomio put a hand over his stomach and set his water glass down. âPoor woman.â
My phone buzzed as Basil replied that he could be online in three minutes.
