The dawn sun glowed through Peter’s closed eyelids. He woke to gulls calling from their perches atop the masts.

“Ahoy!” Captain Hughes called. “We’ll be docking soon!”

Peter stood from his bedroll and stretched. Mirelle groaned and pulled her blanket over her head, matching Rylan. Sephiri was already awake, as was Adrian. Kira sighed and sat up.

“Rest as long as you can,” Peter said.

“Thanks,” Kira murmured. She looked like she hadn’t slept at all. Her face was ghostly white, and the light purple ringing her eyes had turned deep violet. Sweaty blonde hair stuck to her temples. She needed all the rest she could get. There was no telling what awaited them once they left the boat.

Peter scarfed down some food, then he and Rylan followed Captain Hughes’ instructions as they managed the sails. Captain Hughes moved with ease, guiding the small boat toward the town growing in the distance.

“Is that it?” Rylan asked. “Is that Barrentis?”

“The one and only,” Captain Hughes said. “We’ve made good time, despite all of your extra weight.” He chuckled.

The port in the distance looked more like a village than a town. It was tiny but pretty, with white stone buildings and orange and yellow awnings. The dock stretched into the calm ocean, where sailboats and fishing boats loaded up with people. Past the town, the mountains loomed larger than ever. The surrounding landscape looked lush and green, and the brisk salty breeze carried a wiether chill.

Tall, dark cliffs lined the coast at the edge of town. The captain kept his distance, taking a wide berth around the eroded and jagged cliffs to slide into the bay where Barrentis nestled.

Kira packed up her things. She and Sephiri stayed close, speaking in low voices. Adrian had his book open again, scratching notes in the pages. Mirelle finished packing then leaned against the deck rail with a bit of breakfast pie in hand.

“Whoa!” Rylan pointed at the cliffs, his eyes wide. “How does the rock do that?”

A wave crashed against the dark rock at the base of a cliff. Moments later, water spilled out of two holes in the cliff face and back into the sea. The sight sent a strange shiver down Peter’s spine.

“It’s a trick of the tides,” the captain said. “When it’s high tide like this, the water in the cove is deep enough to spill out of those gaps in the rock. The folks in Barrentis say it’s a curse.”

“A curse?” Kira stood next to Peter, gazing at the cliffs with a furrow on her brow. “What do you mean?”

“It’s just an old myth. A lord’s daughter fell in love with a fisherman here in Barrentis, but her parents refused to let them marry. Instead, she was to be shipped off to Norshewa to marry a lord there. When she learned this, she kissed her beloved goodbye, then threw herself off this cliff here, choosing to be with him forever in the sea rather than live without him in Norshewa. So now, the cliffs remember her sadness, and they cry.
