On the drive back to Gram’s, Ryan’s silence filled the truck with deafening anxiety. His concern for Maureen pulled his face down and dulled the light in his eyes, causing my worry to compound.

I twisted in my seat to face him. "What can I do?" I shrank in defeat, powerless. "I feel like I brought this attention on you guys. It’s best I stay away for a while." I shook my head in regret.

"No." His curt tone cut my words short. "I don't want you to stay away." He took his eyes off the road and looked at me. His stern gaze appeared angry at first but then I saw it was something else. Fear, maybe.

"Can you meet me at NUIG on Monday?” My eyebrows lifted. “We could look for Paul. He’d be surprised we actually followed up on his invitation."

Ryan nodded and put his blinker on for the turn to my house. We both knew Sunday would be long and lonely, but neither of us wanted to admit it was best to leave it for now.

I reached to unbuckle my seatbelt and while my next words formed, they got stuck in my throat as we pulled up to Gram's. A strange car sat out front, one I'd never seen before, and a chill of warning ran up the back of my neck. My eyes rolled, annoyed at another complication, no matter how trivial it may be.

"Company?" Ryan parked behind the black sedan.

I let my seatbelt snap back into its holder absentmindedly. "I don't know. I've never seen it before. Maybe it’s for our neighbor."

"So, Monday? The university?" he reminded me. “See you then?”

"Yeah. After school. Okay?"

"Yup." He reached for my hand, but stopped just before touching it.

My fingers walked closer, nearly touching his, and I looked into his wide pupils. Deep pools in his eyes pulled me in and held me there. His chest rose with a heavy inhale and his lips parted to allow the breath to flow out. I wanted to just crawl over to him and curl into his arms—to feel his strength around me. I ached for him to touch me.

Then he pulled his hand away.

I lingered, allowing the moment to settle into my memory, then forced myself to move away from it. I climbed out of the truck and smiled.

"See you Monday," I said. And every step toward my front door added weight to my already burdened soul.

He swung around in a U-turn and drove back toward his home. His focus had to be on Maureen now. She needed him.

My throat constricted as he left my sight. I wanted to stay with him, to spend more time with him. We still had so much to talk about. So much.

Thoughts of his shed and the cans of beer distracted me and my heart plummeted in my chest. It was first time I yearned to be…with a friend.

Then the front door burst open and Gram's voice trailed out on the heels of an older woman with a slight build, dressed head to toe in navy blue.
