Chapter 17

Chloe

Despite the way Mason had been destroying my case in the first two days of testimony, I still felt confident that I would win. I had delivered some serious blows in my opening statement and my subsequent witnesses and evidence would bear out my claims. I was no fool. I knew that my first witness was my weakest. I had wanted to see how Mason handled them to better prepare my future witnesses for their testimony.

I had not expected him to do the damage he had with the two witnesses that followed, but they weren’t the crux of my case either. I could still bring it back around. This wasn’t the first case I’d had to fight uphill and I’d still won plenty of times. All I had to do was stay on top of my game and not get bogged down in my prior personal relationship with Mason. Of course, part of that might be because I’d been unsuccessful in distracting him with my presence.

I was a little disappointed that I’d gotten no reaction to my carefully chosen outfit other than the initial notice of it. I should have known Mason wouldn’t be thrown off his game so easily. It didn’t matter. I had the reports that proved his company crossed a line and harmed the environment. His little barb about my organization just bringing the case to justify our funding was meant to anger my team and me, but we had seen it for what it was worth. It was a tactic that more than one attorney employed when fighting CICI in court. We had the moral high ground. They were just attempting to undermine it…and failing.

On the second day, I dressed a bit more conservatively, though not completely. It was mostly just to send a message to him that I wasn’t reliant on my body to win this case against him. Today was our third day in court, and I wore a pinstriped business suit that included pants rather than a skirt. My hair was pulled up into a tight bun that had none of the usual feminine flair. He had hardly raised a brow when I entered, but I could see that he’d noticed.

A part of me was pleased that he wasn’t letting my attempts at distraction get to him. It meant that when I won this case, it would mean that it was solely because I had done my job better than him. In all honesty, I should have been ashamed of trying to use my looks to get the better of him. It wasn’t my usual style with other attorneys, so why had I tried it with Mason? I had to ask myself whether I had done it purely to aid my case or because I wanted him to notice me.

Whatever the reason for my antics, I was itching to get back on top of things after the previous two days of defeat. There was nothing I hated more than looking at the smug expression on Mason’s face each time he bested me.
