Three days before the qualifiers began, Legacy returned to her room after dinner, shut the door, and—as she had done many nights since she arrived at the academy—tried to summon her grana.

Back on that first day in the cafeteria, Javi had said that she glowed. So Legacy made a nightly practice of sitting on her bed in the dark and trying to imagine a light spreading out from her body.

But as soon as Legacy felt as though maybe something was happening—that her fingertips were starting to warm, or that the roots of her hair might be tingling—she felt herself go cold with fear.

Then she remembered that branch falling on Van. She saw him trapped underneath it, struggling to get out.

They’d been fighting before the branch fell. She’d been so angry. He’d told Legacy that her mother was a witch, and hearing that, Legacy’s skin had turned hot. The hairs on her arm had stood up. She’d glared at him and wished he would die, and he kept repeating that her mother was a witch until a sudden flash of light had blinded Legacy. The next thing she saw was a branch falling from a nearby cycapress tree, trapping Van underneath it.

Sitting in her room at the palace, remembering that, Legacy felt as though she’d stepped into icy cold water. Now there was no chance of summoning any grana. All she could think was that she was a terrible person who had wanted to kill her best friend.

She almost had killed her best friend. And now she owed it to him to win the nationals, to make up for how badly she’d hurt him.

But the more determined she felt, the more nervous she became. She sat alone in her room, trembling with fear and frustration, until she heard the sound of Pippa knocking, coming to bother her about stringbinds and waxes.

This was their nightly routine: for hours, Pippa would sit on Legacy’s bed, her velvet-lined box open wide and little silver corkscrews strewn over the bedspread, running tests on Legacy’s racket to see if they could get Legacy to summon her grana.

First Pippa would tighten a horizontal string. Then she’d tell Legacy to hold the Tempest and close her eyes and imagine something that made her afraid. Or she’d tighten a vertical string, then tell Legacy to hold the Tempest and close her eyes and imagine something she dreamed would come true. Over and over again, Pippa fiddled with various strings and tried to get Legacy to channel a feeling. But no matter which tests Pippa ran, nothing happened.

And tonight—three nights before the qualifiers began—was no different than any other occasion. Legacy couldn’t summon her grana. Then Pippa arrived and tried to help. But as the hours went by, Pippa became more and more agitated. She was certain that she was missing something.

Sitting beside Legacy on the bed, she moaned in frustration. “How did you tame that pyrus, anyway?” she asked. “Didn’t you summon your grana to do that?”

“I just said a chant,” Legacy said.
