I Lost Myself in the White Corn

I lost myself in the white corn, in a salt grain

yes, Portuguese salt, in a crater lemon and a walnut

on the other side of Arizona, by the coppery workers

I don’t know how it happened, but yes, I lost myself

it was a matter of flashy legs going into a can, a jelly jar

the yellow ears on the hill of Mrs. Zarzamora, the ankle in

Papá’s tortillas, I fell fixed, in a grainy peppery pool

from Ixtapa, what a storm, during homework,

an oxygen circus in my milk, go to sleep my child

the colonel said, the colonel parrot, there on that pillow

or is it a marimba, on that dreamy wooden plate

grainy dreams, Grandma Alvina’s chicken, I am joking

on the last step of the universe, got lost, yes

in the tired night & my glasses? Didn’t lose them—

found them in my planet shirt, the one made of sun.
