Chapter Fifteen

“That was an incredible class,” Stephanie Jones says, wiping off her face with a towel. “I haven’t had my butt kicked like that in a long time.”

“You didn’t have the hangover I had last weekend after karaoke at Doogan’s Pub,” Monica says, nudging Stephanie’s shoulder. “That was a butt whooping. This was better than that. When’s your next class, Trish?”

“Tomorrow morning,” I reply. If I’m still alive by then.

“You were at the wine bar last night, right?” Stephanie questions, even though she already knows it’s true. We nodded at each other for Pete’s sake.

I’m crossing my fingers she doesn’t bring up my interaction with Mistress Megan. Do they know her? Did they see Layne reach out for a bitch slap? I would be so mortified if she brought that up now.

“Yeah, my friend Layne and I, you know her from some classes here I think. We decided to check it out. It’s a nice place.” I say it casually, as if I know what all the other nice places are like. As if I’m out all the time, though I suspect Stephanie is only bringing up the wine bar at all because she was surprised to see me out.

Truthfully, Paul and I hit up Applebee’s maybe once a month for a date night, but otherwise, I didn’t even go out much before he passed.

“Yeah, I know Layne,” Stephanie replies. “Used to see her at Mack’s Pub all the time. That’s where we used to hold our book clubs, but then they started live music on Thursdays, and we couldn’t hear a thing.”

“So now we’ve switched over to the wine bar,” Monica finishes her point. “We meet for book club every month. You should join us! We read everything, thrillers, steamies, biographies. It’s fun!”

“You don’t even read them,” Stephanie razzed. “You only come for the wine.”

“And the good company,” Monica shot back. “Seriously though, Trish, you should join us. Third Thursday of every month. And you just said you liked the wine bar. Now you’ll have another excuse to go. I can add you to our book chat.”

I smile. Is this how adult friendships work? They only need to see you out one time, doing one thing, and they just assume you are the kind of person who does stuff all the time?

“Yeah, sure. I’d love to, that sounds fun. Add me,” I say, wiping off my own sweat with a crinkled white towel.

It was partially true. I did crave more relationships, and not just because Dr. Cavinder instructed me to. Hanging out with Layne was teaching me why friendships were important. She was good for me. For a brief moment, I imagined having other people in my corner like that, willing to beat up strangers for me and talking smack about someone they didn’t know simply because that person was cruel to me. I liked that aspect of it. I knew expanding my circle would be a good thing. Maybe Layne couldn’t beat up Dog Park Kim alone, but with Stephanie and Monica on her side? They were born athletes for heaven’s sake.
