CHAPTER THIRTEEN
âI DONâT KNOW if you saw this on our website or not, and Iâm sort of hoping itâs a surprise,â Quentin said as he walked Jordan down a long row of shops inside the hotel. He stopped and pointed at a store with a Christmas tree in the front window. Everything was red and green and glittered and âJoy to the Worldâ spilled through the open door. âDoes it make you feel more at home?â
Jordan smiled at the crowded window display. The tree rotated and was so weighted down with ornaments, garland and lights, he was amazed it didnât fall over. Under the tree, a red-and-green train hurried around a circular track. One of the ornaments caught his eyeâa sailboat in serene shades of blue and ivory. It seemed like an island of peace on the garish tree.
âItâs open year-round,â Quentin continued. âGuests love it.â
âI can understand why,â Jordan said. âGuests at the Great Island always admire the lobby tree thatâs decorated all year long.â Although the one in the corner of the lobby at the island hotel was tastefully understated most of the year, only wearing glittering ornaments in December.
âAt the end of this hallway, thereâs an exit to the putting green and the bocce lawn, and itâs also where guests can catch the shuttle to the ski lifts in the winter and other outdoor adventures in the summer. I hope youâre looking forward to trying those out,â Quentin said. âItâs good to see everything we have to offer here so you can better assist our guests. We insist that all our employees, from the housekeepers to the concierge desk, try at least two of our hosted activities during their first month of work.â
âOnly two?â Jordan asked with a smile. âVioletâs probably going to want to try them all.â
âSheâs adventurous?â
âSheâs here with me now, isnât she?â Jordan asked.
âGood thing. You wouldnât want to make a life-changing decision without your partner by your side. That kind of thing never turns out well.â
It occurred to Jordan that he hadnât had to ask anyoneâs opinion or permission in years. He didnât need to call anyone if he was working late. Never had to sit through a movie or a dinner he didnât like just to appease someone. He could trade in his car, repaint his house or get a pet without consulting anyone. It was his life. Just...him.
Of course he usually talked to Violet about everything. She helped him pick out most of his clothes. Had gone with him to the mainland to buy a used car. He smiled, remembering coming back on the ferry with the car and feeling like a million bucks. Violet had been his first passenger.
He never needed Violetâs permission, but he liked it. And he trusted her. Would she be impressed with the Great Valley Hotel? If he asked her flat out what he should do and begged her to be truthful, would she tell him to take the job and grab the opportunity?
âI suggest you start on the adventuring tomorrow afternoon,â Quentin said.
