CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

"I don't want to stay here tonight," Joshua said to Kaylie, and the words felt like a blade in her heart.

"What?" Kaylie asked, her heart accelerating. "Okay, then. Okay. You can go home. I'll let you out now. Maybe at least have your food first, right?”

This had been a bad idea. Maybe he wasn’t on board with her unbelievably fancy house, and the fact that the damned alarm was going off already and there were people outside hunting for her.

He looked at her with what seemed like rather stretched patience, and sighed.

"That's not the point. The point is that I don't want you to stay here either.”

“You don’t?” she said warily, now completely confused and wondering where this was going.

“Look at you. You're stressed to the nines. The tens, even. You've been home five minutes and someone has already tried to break in. You have big problems, Kaylie. Huge. This is not normal. You shouldn't have to live with this. Nobody should have to do that. It's a level of unacceptable danger. It's crazy that it's happening here, and to you."

He was staring at her with an intensity in his eyes she'd never seen before. Well, okay. She had seen it when it was directed at crime scenes or suspects. Just not at her.

"I know," she muttered. "You're right. I know I'm in denial."

"Let's eat this food. I'll admit, you have good standards in microwave meals, and I can't compete with it." Now there was a rueful humor in his tone. "And then let's drive to my place."

"To - what?" Now she didn't know if she could eat her food. Where was this going?

"You see, I don't want to leave you here. I don't think it's safe. Look, I know you. You can't let go, and I can see how determined you are, and that you can't walk away from this. You're going to want to find out who's doing this to you, and figure out what the hell is going on."

"I can't just walk away without a fight," she said.

"I know, and part of me thinks you should fight. But not here, not tonight. You're also not going to be able to relax here. Not with that alarm sounding. And there's nothing you can do to stop it. It could happen again. It’s not up to you, it’s up to whoever’s out there.”

“They might go when security arrives,” she tried, but he continued, his voice stern.

“Kaylie, we're in the middle of a damned case. I don't want to spend the whole night listening for the sound of an alarm and freaking out when I hear it. I'm sure you don't either. Neither of us is going to rest. And we need to rest if we're going to get this solved."

She nodded. Now she felt embarrassed. For a moment she'd misinterpreted his intentions, but getting back to reality - whatever that was for her at the moment - she could see that his intentions were still caring. And practical. Everything she associated with Joshua.
