As the dust settled on the forest floor, I glanced around at my surroundings. The scene was a lot quieter now. Most of the players had disappeared—among them Amefyst, Drag0n, and Dustin955, I realized with a heavy heart. The only gamers left fighting were F3lx and two players on the other team, TRX23 and AdamSlays.

I rushed over to help F3lx fend off a relentless attack from TRX23. But I was still several feet too far away when AdamSlays aimed to stab F3lx right in the chest. F3lx’s body spasmed, his avatar flickering, and then he began to fall.

“No!” I gasped.

F3lx couldn’t get eliminated now. It was all over, especially if I was all on my own.

But then a miracle happened. I had to blink several times to make sure I was seeing things correctly.

TRX23 and AdamSlays, who had both homed in for the kill, stopped moving completely. For a few moments, it appeared as though they’d glitched. The scenario jarred a memory from my mind—in the last round, I’d frozen for a moment, too. Were these just bugs in the game?

Those precious few seconds were all F3lx needed to turn the situation on its head. Mid-fall, he placed a hand on the ground. His avatar stopped flickering and turned fully solid once more. Using his arm as balance, he kicked his feet up into the air.

Whack. Thud.

F3lx connected solidly with the two frozen gamers’ chins, sending them flying backward. Then he straightened and started after the fallen gamers.

I raced forward, shoving F3lx back.

F3lx: What the heck?

TheRuiNar: You’re injured. Eat a healing peach, and stay back. I’ll take care of these guys!

I reached into my bag for three materials: Wire. Fuse. Gunpowder.

On the ground, the gamers were stirring, no longer frozen. Before AdamSlays could get to his feet, I slammed him away by catching him in the stomach with the end of my Ruyi Jingu Bang.

AdamSlays went down again. And this time, he wasn’t coming back up. I was making sure of it.

TRX23 had already stood up and charged toward F3lx, but he didn’t make it far. I brought the bomb out of my bag and tossed it at him and AdamSlays.

TheRuiNar: DUCK, F3LX!

As fast as my legs would carry me, I raced for cover in a cluster of bushes. I closed my eyes and shielded my Codex by throwing my arms over my head.

BOOM!

The earth rocked beneath my feet. The vibrations from the explosion lasted for maybe thirty seconds before subsiding. When the earth was steady again, I emerged from the bushes. Red and black dust—all that was left of the two gamers and the trees that had been there before—floated in the air above the scorched dirt.

F3lx stood up and walked over to me. He stopped. For a moment, neither of us said anything. Then:

F3lx: You could’ve let me handle those two guys. I didn’t need you to butt in.

I rolled my eyes, before remembering he couldn’t see it. Did this guy know how to say “thank you”?

TheRuiNar: Yeah, because you were handling it sooo well before I saved you.
