II

Most farming at Caporotondo is extensive, and the main crops are staple foods, farmers keep back enough for their own needs and market the rest.

The main crops are grains, pulses and olives; in addition, most farmers have a small vineyard and a vegetable garden in which they produce solely for their own consumption. Some have citrus orchards, and a few produce enough pears to market what they do not eat.

The figures in Table 8 are the official ones. They give only a rough guide since changes of use, which have been quite common during the last decade, may not be registered for some years after they have been made. Arable land can be used for grain, tobacco or pulses. ‘Arable with trees’ is a translation of seminativo arborato, and generally means that olives are not planted too thickly for crops to be grown between them; these are a poor man’s olive grove. ‘Other’ here includes the small vegetable gardens, farm buildings and rather more than one hectare of land which I could not identify.
