The King spoke, eloquent and movingly, about his conscience, his puzzlement over the lack of a son, about his love for Katherine. When he spoke of the children they had lost, she could not look at him.

I too have lost children, my soul whispered to her. I know your pain, my Queen. Not for the first time I wished the woman I served now was not pitted against the woman I had served for years. Katherine’s dignity and her pain both touched me. I admired her. But I also admired Anne.
