FLUSHED AND HAPPY, Rosalind removed her pelisse and bonnet in the confines of the room she shared with her husband. Evan had reluctantly taken himself off to the library, leaving her to explore the contents of the small chest. Despite his teasing, he had respected her need for privacy.
Breathing out, the young woman lifted the lid and stared down at the papers before her. She really had no idea what she would find. Would there be meaningless correspondence with old friends? Bills from creditors and tailors that had gone unpaid? Would it have a clue for what she wished to know?
The journal would probably be the most useful, but Rosalind was aware it could also be the most painful. She lifted it from the chest and set it to the side to confront when she finished with everything else. Then, she drew out the first handful of letters. Her breath caught in her throat. The topmost was written in a hand she had not seen in many years but knew all too well: her motherâs.
Sitting on the window seat, Rosalind unfolded the paper and read what had to have been one of her motherâs final letters to her father. A tearful smile formed on Rosalindâs face as she read her motherâs fond account of some cleverness Rosalind had done as a child. Mary Emerson urged her husband to return to see for himself.
None of her motherâs words indicated any idea of the affair John Emerson may have been conducting at the time. There was no hint of unhappiness or worry, beyond a desire for her husband to be near her once again. Nothing was stated about why or where the man had gone.
Sighing, Rosalind refolded the missive and set it aside to keep safe. She hoped she would find other letters written by her mother as she had none at all. Nothing of her motherâs had been saved.
The next paper was what she had been expecting: a bill from Weston. John Emerson had loved a well-fitted jacket. A shame the man had ignored the cost of it and had added to the financial trouble of the family. Had it been paid? It must have been, but by whom?
The door opened and interrupted her as she began to open the third message. âPardon me, my lady,â the maid said. âMrs. Williams is asking if you would join her in her sitting room.â
Though a part of her wanted to refuse, Rosalind said, âOf course. I will come down straight away.â
With a nod, the maid withdrew. Sighing, Rosalind returned the letters to the chest. After all, they were not going anywhere and the time she had to spend with her cousin was limited. She set the chest aside and left the room.
