21.

Vartan’s first inkling of trouble was when the SUV slammed into the left rear quarter of the tiny two-seater Mercedes they had switched out in Vegas. He was barely able to control the car as it swerved across the lanes, but a combination of his driving skills, the various traction control devices and the steering assistance built into the little roadster saved them. After flat spotting at least two tires as they skidded sideways down the freeway at nearly 80 miles per hour, he jerked the wheel back to the right all the way to positive lock and hit the gas. The 350 horsepower engine kicked in almost immediately, and he regained the balance of the car as they straightened out and shot back up the road. Luckily, they were on a wide, flat, straight section of asphalt, with no other cars around. Lori had been completely silent during the three or four seconds it had taken for the whole sequence to play out, and that told Vartan that she either wasn’t in sufficient command of her faculties to make so much as a noise, or she had been expecting something like this and wasn’t particularly surprised by it.

He was, and he cursed himself inwardly for getting so sloppy. They’d lingered too long in Las Vegas, especially after the station had come down, and they’d allowed their pursuers to catch up to them. A quick glance in the rear view mirror and he could see the headlights of the SUV receding in the distance as the powerful engine of the Mercedes hit maximum revs.

He took a brief moment to consider just who was chasing them. He’d caught a quick glance at the vehicle, and it didn’t seem to have any white panels or a light rack on the roof. Unless it was a chance encounter with an unmarked police vehicle, which he doubted, he was virtually certain that they were in a conflict with the same group that had probably killed Tsien and Garvin. It certainly wasn’t typical law enforcement procedure to try and wreck a car you’re pursuing without trying to stop it peaceably first. Whoever they were, they evidently intended to wreck them as opposed to making sure they killed them, since they could have waited for a more treacherous stretch of road to hit them with their much larger vehicle.

“He’s coming again,” Lori warned, a remarkable calm in her voice given the situation.

“I see it,” Vartan said back, checking his side mirrors. A quick glance down at his speedometer told him they were doing better than an hundred and sixty, a speed at which no normal SUV or police cruiser should be able to overtake them. But yet, there were the approaching headlights getting larger and larger.

OK, he thought to himself, in some ways that would make it easier. There wouldn’t be any additional police brought into the fray, no back-up units or road blocks to complicate the chase. He need only rely on his skills and training to get him out of a tough spot once again, as it had many times before.
