Chapter 7

At the same time, in another part of London, Krista and the twins David and Edward were kicking a ball around the grass of the park that formed the inner section of the square the Caulfield and other homes surrounded. They were not alone in the park. The people of the square were enjoying the late-afternoon sunshine.

“To me, to me!” David yelled, running as fast as his little legs could manage.

Edward, sweating with his hair almost glued to his head, kicked the ball to Krista.

“You were supposed to pass it to me!” David clenched his fists and with fury in his green eyes started towards his twin.

“Gentlemen, is that any way to behave?”

“Daddy!”

Argument forgotten, two little whirlwinds ran towards the male whose commanding voice had broken up the argument before it could get started.

Krista spun around, the lightweight skirt of her navy-blue dress swirling. Captain Caulfield and Lia were standing arm in arm inside the entrance to the park.

The captain allowed the boys to tackle him off his feet and proceeded to roll around the grass, wrestling with his exuberant sons.

Lia walked over to join Krista, the two women enjoying the sight before them.

“A surprise visit – he arrived this morning after you had taken the boys to school,” Lia said softly. “Some additional training and whatnot.” She was of course thrilled to see her husband but in spite of his inability to give her details of the cause of his visit – she could guess – her thoughts and fears were hidden behind her smiling face. “You may go freshen up if you wish.” Lia never took her eyes off her husband and sons. These moments were too few and too precious. “I will watch the boys.” She sank onto a nearby bench.

“Thank you.” Krista would have liked to stay in the small park and enjoy the sunshine but it felt intrusive. She hurried back towards the gate without calling goodbye to the boys. They were enjoying themselves and didn’t need her.
