Chapter 9.
GHULK LOOKED like he was practically shaking with excitement when Ted and Grell teleported into court before him. Ted wrinkled his nose when he saw that Mireâs corpse was still here and starting to swell.
Probably why it was just the three of them in there now, he mused to himself. No one else wanted to deal with the stench.
He and Grell had gotten dressed, but even with magic it hadnât been easy. Theyâd barely been able to keep their hands off each other and almost ended up back in bed. Definitely would have been nicer than standing here staring at Ghulk, but Ted knew they still had a case to solve. The hours were flying by in a wonderful rush of excitement and passion, but soon they were going to run out.
Ghulkâs hooves clapped against the floor as he bowed down, exclaiming, âYour Highness! Thank you so much for meeting me! I have news about Humble Visseract!â
âDid he write a signed confession and throw himself in the dungeon?â Grell asked wistfully.
âWhat?â Ghulk was aghast, shaking his giant head. âNo, Your Highness! I think Iâve discovered his motives for murdering your beloved cousin! Iâve been listening to rumors from court, and he learned that you had given Mire your keyââ
âYes, to the pits,â Grell said briskly. âWe already know that.â
âUhâ¦.â Ghulk was alarmed. âYou do?â
âUh-huh,â Ted chimed in.
âWell⦠hmm.â Ghulk tittered for a moment and suddenly jumped. âHa! Well, Iâve got more news, Your Highness! Did you know he was in league with Gronoch, the god of healing and attrition?â
âYup,â Grell said, emphasizing the P with a loud pop of his lips. He crossed his arms, clearly unimpressed. âNext youâre going to tell me that this means war because Visseract met with Gronoch down in the pits, arenât you?â
Ghulkâs milky eyes widened, and his head dropped with a disappointed huff. âYes, Your Highness.â
Ted grinned, pleased that his information from Kunst was coming in handy. Making Ghulk look like an idiot was an unexpected bonus.
âToo bad.â Grell winked at Ted. âOur handsome and deliciously thick suspect has already graciously pointed out that since we donât know exactly where they met and considering most of the pits are technically outside of Xenon, there is no solid evidence of the treaty having been violated. So, no declaring war on Zebulon, Iâm afraid.â
Smiling bashfully, Ted allowed himself to feel a small tickle of pride.
âBut Your Highness!â Ghulk pleaded.
âI canât believe that I missed out on prime post-coitus cuddling time for this.â Grell groaned. âPlease shut up.â
Shutting up appeared to be the last thing on Ghulkâs mind, and he continued to argue with Grell. Ted wandered a few feet away to give them some space. He found himself drawn to Mireâs swelling corpse and was pleasantly surprised to see that decomposition was unchanged from what he knew outside of Xenon.
Somehow that was comforting.
Mireâs eyes had dehydrated and sunk into his skull, and his belly had puffed up as his corpse prepared to putrefy. A sparkle
