Chapter 52
Charles Sanderson had furtively followed Tom Jackson and Ros Green to Soho the day before. He preferred to spend as much time as possible watching his quarry. It allowed him to observe behavioural patterns that often proved useful to the implementation of his plan.
Sanderson had been a professional soldier and sniper before heâd met Murray Jensen at a gym almost ten years ago and had been persuaded to join his growing business. Charles was built like an ox and had the strength of one. At forty-one, he had the physique of a much younger man. He had shaved his head, had arms and legs like a body builder, and the three large folds of skin at the base of his skull were the only suggestion that he did have a neck. Sanderson wore a permanent scowl on his face and his crooked mouth made it look like he was always on the verge of a snarl.
He was certain that Ros was infatuated with Jackson, but he was unable to determine if the feeling was mutual. He detected mixed messages from Jackson, but their walk back to the hotel after leaving the Tube station left him in no doubt about how Ros felt about the handsome lawyer.
In order to avoid detection, Sanderson had decided not to continue his surveillance of the pair after theyâd returned to their hotel.
He had returned early in the morning to take up the vantage point heâd identified the day before. From there he could see both the hotel entrance and the road Jackson and Ros would need to take to get to the South Kensington Tube station.
He was rewarded for his diligence and patience when they left the hotel together not long after 10:00 a.m. and headed for the Tube station. Very promising, Charles had thought to himself. At this hour in winter, the Tube station will still be crawling with commuters. Heâd quickly headed to the station to ensure he arrived first.
The hitman had been able to utilise his considerable skills to place himself in the crowd adjacent to Jackson and Ros. Charles was tall but as luck would have it, he was surrounded by a number of tall commuters, who were also still wearing hats and scarves. He had taken note of where the CCTV cameras were and felt he had positioned himself well, should an opportunity present itself. It did. As the train they were about to catch began to arrive, most turned in the direction of the train. As Ros turned, she was momentarily off balance. The slight nudge from him exaggerated her imbalance, and made it look as if she had flung herself in front of the train just as the front carriage was about to pass their position.
Sanderson calmly left with the rest of the commuters, keen to be gone by the time the authorities arrived to begin their investigation. He noticed that the nearby woman whoâd screamed loudly had remained to comfort Jackson.
