Chapter Twenty-One

ELEKTRA

I reluctantly join Vasya on his quest to show me a good time. I still feel sick about what happened to Yulian, and I’m also nervous about being too distracted to enjoy whatever it is that Vasya has planned for us tonight. It feels like no matter what I do or feel, I can’t win recently.

I put on a stony, unreadable expression, completely open to interpretation in the hopes that Vasya will just let me open up at my own pace. I don’t want to be rushed into anything. I still haven’t settled in, and despite all the luxuries this life provides, I’m starting to wonder if it’s any better than prison.

Spoiled thinking, perhaps, but I can’t help it. I feel awful.

We park the car in a large parking garage, which is unusual for Vasya and his associates. Usually, Alexei takes the car and hides it somewhere while Vasya and I wait for him. This time, we’re parking with others like we’re just regular civilians.

This building is large and kept by a gate that requires a fee of a hundred dollars just to pass through. Maybe we’re not acting like regular civilians after all. I doubt any normal person would pay a hundred dollars just to park.

It’s cold tonight, and the dress that Vasya has chosen for me is short and skimpy, barely covering my ass with its tight velvet fabric. Fortunately, I’ve been given a long fur coat to wear over it for the walk into the club, but I wonder to myself if Vasya wants me to feel exposed and self-conscious for his own amusement.

I certainly wouldn’t put it past him. Even the glimpses of empathy that I’ve seen from him seem to be tainted with an ulterior motive. I think he enjoys having a position of power over me, knowing that I’m in no position to say no to him even if I’m crawling out of my skin from self-consciousness.

When we enter the building via a catwalk, I’m shocked to see that we seem to have entered a hotel rather than a nightclub. Perhaps the club is attached on the other side?

I can’t be sure. Nothing about the way Vasya operates seems to make any sense to me. It’s possible he just takes the long way everywhere to avoid being seen by cops.

Apparently, there’s a well-known network of cops that cycles through certain areas of the city on particular days of the week, and Vasya has been doing this long enough to know where they spend the most time, what they’re looking for, and how they’re tipped off to mafia activity.

I’m not even certain what it is we’re doing here. I’m not dressed for any kind of meeting, and I’d hate to show up somewhere looking like this if it would draw attention to me. Vasya said we were going to have a good time, but as we walk through the hotel, my heartrate climbs in anticipation of the exact opposite.

The fact that we’re in a hotel scares me a bit.
