Brianna couldn't help her excitement. As they walked across the grounds, she tried to take in everything around her, marveling at the architecture of the old buildings and the myriad students walking by in their varying robes. She turned in a circle as they walked, trying to see everything at once.
"About three hundred years ago, that building used to house the greatest group of SpiritSingers known as the Sonorous Quartet," Lauryn offered, pointing to a small building with a domed roof that stood slightly distanced from the other buildings.
"What happened to them?" Brianna asked.
"No one really knows, but I've heard that they had a disagreement with the king of the time, and he cast them out. I hear they were doing unsanctioned experiments on dead bodies." She said this last part in a near whisper, as if those long dead SpiritSingers would rise from the grave just for mentioning them.
Brianna looked at the building, cocking her head in curiosity. From the corner of her eye, she saw Brayden shiver. She didn't have the same fear he did of the strange magic-users, but she didn’t have his experience with them either. A SpiritSinger had taken him when he was so small, and he'd lived under their shadow his entire life. Now their mother had been taken by the same one: Renn Quill. Brayden shivered every time he said the SpiritSinger’s name.
"What else," Brianna said, turning to look at the girl beside her. "Tell me more about the university."
"Well, they say that there are vast underground caverns carved into the rock beneath, but that's never been proven. There are caves, yes, but none more than a few dozen feet into the rocks. I was in one once!" she said excitedly. Brianna smiled encouragingly but kept an eye on her brother who in turn kept his eye on the domed building. "It's said they house an illegal smuggling ring or something," Lauryn continued. “I’ve even heard that the prince is a part of it!”
She continued telling them the vague gossip and history of the university until they arrived at a long building. The roof had ornate carvings of grotesque figures that seemed to loom over the edges and watch the students as they filed inside. The twins followed Lauryn down a long hall and into a large classroom.
They entered at the top of tiered stairs, each large step containing a row of chairs and tables. Several rows down was the floor of the classroom, where a podium stood empty. Brianna followed Lauryn to the front row and took a seat, only then realizing that Brayden was not beside her. He was still frozen at the top of the steps. She frowned and went back up, ignoring the push and talk of other students who were filing in to take their seats.
"What's wrong?" She asked softly, not wanting to draw attention to Brayden's behavior. He shrugged, but she could see fear in his eyes.
"I don't want to sit at the very front is all.
