Walker stared at the ceiling as he lay under the sheets next to Leila. The room was dark, just a hint of yellow light seeping in beneath the door from the lamp in the living room and the filtered glow of the moon shining through the sheer curtains on his right. The rain had stopped at some point during their little bedtime escapade.

Leila was sound asleep, her head resting in the nook of his arm. Her light, hypnotic breathing tempted to lull him back to sleep, but there were too many questions floating in his head to give in. Even after an hour full of rigorous yet pleasurable exercise. So passionate that at one point he nearly popped his stitches.

As he lay with his other arm resting beneath his head, his thoughts swirled in and out of the ups and downs of the day. One minute he’d get a flash of the dream he’d had where he put the grill fork through the man’s neck; the next he’d see Leila staring into his eyes as she moved on top of him; then on to the man he’d shot dead in the underground drug room. He imagined that few humans had seen a more roller-coaster day than his.

A shadow moved past the window beside him.

Walker slid his arm out from under Leila’s neck, slinked out of bed, and quickly pulled on his jeans. He picked up the nine-millimeter he’d left on the dresser and moved over to the door. He glanced back at the window where he’d seen the figure go by, but now he saw only moonlight. In between Leila’s soft breaths, he listened closely for any sign of movement. He didn’t hear anything yet.

Holding the gun in his left hand he turned the doorknob with his right, one centimeter at a time. Once the latch cleared the latch strike, Walker eased the door open a slit. He could see half the hallway wall, then the opening into the living room. The lamp light showed him the curtain-covered window overlooking the driveway and the right half of the front door.

Everything was still.

Walker pulled the door open a little further, listening intently as he went. His mind was flashing to the basement of the equipment shed. To the second gunmen he’d tied up instead of killing. That was probably going to come back to haunt him. No doubt an error caused by the amnesia that kept him from being himself. He stepped out into the hallway. He heard the faint whinny of a horse from the back of the property and the ticking of the old-school cuckoo clock in the kitchen. Nothing else.

Walker’s breath quickened as his adrenaline began rising. He inhaled through his nose and gave a long exhale through his mouth to try to even himself out. If he was a pro at this, his subconscious mind didn’t know it at the moment. He stepped down the hallway toward the opening to the living room. No one was inside. He could see through all the way to the kitchen.
