Vance lay face down on the comforter atop the bed in her room. Lauren straddled him, sitting on his hamstrings with one leg on either side of his. She lifted the thin black robe and the tail of his shirt underneath, and looked. The barbs had penetrated both layers and he wanted her to pull them out.
It was as if his clothing had been staple-gunned to his shoulder blades. Rings of blood wicked through the fabric.
âI told you. Youâre going to have to yank them out. Just grab the wires and pull.â
She leaned back, biding her time, worrying how heâd react.
He tried to get up. âFine. Iâll do it myself.â
She pushed him down by the back of his neck, shoved a kneecap in the small of his back, grabbed both wires at the same time and yanked the prongs out.
âShiiiiittttt.â
He rolled over, pushing her off and pounded his heels on the bed. âCocksucker. Son of a bitch.â
She scooted away from him.
âThank you,â he finally said. He pulled the robe over his head and unbuttoned his shirt. She helped him, gently tugging one sleeve at a time. He went to the mirror and craned his neck, inspecting the holes in his back. It looked like heâd been stabbed twice with an ice pick.
âDid you get a look at him?â
She shook her head. âHe was wearing a mask, like a knit cap over his face. And it was dark. He wanted that envelope you had badly enough to zap me. I woulda handed it to him but he didnât give me the chance.â
âThatâs so fucked up, to stun-gun you. Let me see your leg.â
It was on her upper thigh and in order to show it to him, sheâd have to take her pants off. There were burn marks on her pant leg.
âHang on.â She went into the bathroom and returned with a towel around her waist.
Vance lifted it and looked at the purple marks ripening. He pressed with his thumb.
She went slack at the knees. âAuw.â
âWhoever did this has access to police-grade equipment. The weapon he used? Itâs a handy little dual-purpose design. Part taser, part stun gun. After the shooter releases the cartridge, it converts into a stun gun. Thatâs what happened to you. Whoever used it is trained. He had to time it just right to make sure I was immobile long enough for him to subdue you, to get what he wanted and get away.â
âI heard Cheks bark, once, maybe twice,â she said. âAnd then the guy came up from behind, from out of nowhere. I saw a red dot.â
âA laser.â He slung two wet hand towels soaking in the sink, over his back. âYou need to put ice on that,â he touched her thigh lightly.
She threw on a pair of jeans and took the empty ice bucket from the dresser. When she opened the door to leave the room, Luther stood under the veranda, his closed fingers facing the door like brass knuckles.
He stopped mid-knock and craned his neck, peering in through the doorway.
