Later that night, as Ray, Walt, and George were driving along a secondary highway in central Georgia, Charles Zent received a phone call from Greg Schultz telling him an alarm was going off at the construction site. Schultz said he received a call from facility security but was in Boston for a meeting the following morning, so he asked Charles if he would check on it. Schultz said that he remotely accessed the cameras, but hadnât been able to find the source of the disturbance.
Despite it being nearly midnight, Charles agreed to visit the site and make sure nothing was wrong. He couldnât lie to himself, and admitted his trepidation was because he sent a sample of an experimental sedative to the Alachua County Sheriffâs office after reading about the deputy that first arrived on the scene of the accident involving George Wilmanâs pursuers.
Charles took great care to protect his identity, sending the sample and an accompanying letter anonymously. He dropped it off in a mailbox ninety minutes from his home, but he wasnât sure that was enough. Despite all that, Charles had a deep-seated sense of responsibility (the same sense that all but forced him to contact the authorities) and was afraid if something was wrong at the site and he failed to check on it he would be in deep shit. Considering that Charles had been wide-awake (he had slept little over the past week, and the sleep that he got was of poor quality) and fully dressed, it wasnât much of an imposition.
He put on a light jacket and had nearly made it to the door that led from his house to the garage when something told him to go to his desk. He opened the bottom left-hand drawer and began pulling everything out of it, placing the contents haphazardly on top of the desk. Once it was empty, Charles used the blade of his pocketknife to pry up the false bottom and expose a hidden compartment. He grabbed a cheap flip phone and powered it up before sending a text message that would go to three separate numbers, all belonging to the same person. Those phones, like the one in Charlesâ hand, were burners, cheap throwaway phones used for clandestine communications.
The original agreement called for Charles to wait for a confirmation text before sending this information, but something inside compelled him to do it now. He was probably being paranoidâhe hoped that was allâbut decided it was better to play it safe. He proofread the message twice, ensuring that he included the pertinent information:
Dolphin garage at MIA.
Level 3, southeast corner.
Keys in left front wheel well.
It was direct and to the point, covering all necessary information. Satisfied, Charles sent the message and shut the phone off. He returned it to its hiding spot, replaced the false bottom, and placed everything back into the drawer. Instead of getting up, he sat there and thought about what could happen, not just to him, but with everything that was going on.
