“She must be crazy. It’s the only reason why we haven’t met this so-called woman.”

Max rolled up the partition to laugh at my mother’s statement in peace. When Sadie Harrison refused every other method of communication but FaceTime, I knew this conversation wasn’t going to be pleasant. Things had been moving at a rapid rate in my world and I had missed a few family dinners. Okay, I’d missed all of them since the day Keva moved in.

“Short lady, she isn’t crazy. My schedule has been busy with opening the resort.”

“Well, you must be crazy talking about marrying a woman who hasn’t met your parents. I’ve established that Shawn has lost his mind. He went off and married this Harper woman already, without so much of a mention he was dating. Guess what? I still haven’t met her.”

A sense of relief fell over my body now the secret was out. Shawn forcing me to keep his secret from our parents was indeed cruel. He called me the day he married Happy Harper.

“Shawn didn’t tell me; your father spilled the beans. I guess you two don’t need your mother anymore.”

I ran two fingers over the bridge of my nose, trying to figure out how I was going to get my mother off this phone. The longer I stared into my mother’s brown eyes, the more the guilt intensified. If I was in reaching distance, a shoe or phone would’ve flown by my head. Sadie was five foot five and one hundred twenty pounds on a good day, but the woman still scared me to death.

“How about you come over tomorrow night and meet my Keva and Harper?”

“I shouldn’t have to call and threaten my son to get an invitation. I’m not coming.”

Tilting my head back against the headrest, I exhaled an exhausted breath. Over the years, I’d spoiled this woman right along with the other two Harrison men. Whenever I dated a woman, my mother was the first to know and understand she was still number one. Things were different this time, and I didn’t have the heart to announce her demotion. I’d avoided her and now things were coming full circle.

“Mommy.”

I lowered my eyelids, putting on my best sad performance.

“Don’t you mommy me. Was I mommy while you out here making plans to get married?”

“Please come over to meet Keva. I want my two best ladies to get along. I will expect you here tomorrow at 7:00. I love you.”

I stared at the home screen of my phone in disbelief. My mother had never hung up on me. Shit, I really must be in the doghouse. I texted my assistant Nel to send my mother a large, over-the-top bouquet. Next, I emailed my jeweler for two pairs of diamond earrings for Keva and my mother.

When I tell Keva I committed her to a family dinner, there was a good chance I’d be joining a second doghouse. If I left it up to her, we would never leave her man-made bubble.
