So I sang the saddest song I knew in the saddest voice I could make. I sung it over and over until Emily Junior and I were both asleep.

Scott Dumps Hannie

Usually I like going-to-Daddy’s weekends. But not this time.

Everyone thought I was a greedy-guts. So I was gigundo mad at them. They did not understand a thing.

On Saturday I called Hannie. Her mother answered the phone.

“Hannie isn’t here,” said Mrs. Papadakis. “She’s at Scott Hsu’s. Why don’t you go over there? I’m sure Hannie and Scott would be glad to see you.”

At least someone would be glad to see me, I thought.

“Thank you,” I told Mrs. Papadakis.

I decided to leave right away. “I’m going to Scott Hsu’s!” I yelled as I left the house. I did not think anyone cared.

I had never met Scott, but Hannie had pointed out his house to me several times. “That’s where he lives,” she would say. Then she would sigh deeply.

“How does it feel to be in love?” I would ask her.

“It feels … wonderful.”

I was halfway to Scott’s house when I saw someone coming toward me. The person got closer and closer.

It was Hannie.

“Hannie!” I cried. “Hi! I’m here for the weekend.”

Hannie didn’t answer me. She looked upset.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Scott does not want to marry me.”

“He doesn’t?”

Hannie shook her head. “No. We were such good friends, too. We were playing together almost every day. I gave Scott some Oreos once, and he gave me a caterpillar. Then today I told him I was thinking about weddings. I told him about my mother’s dress and about flowers and everything.”

“Did you tell him about double weddings?” I asked.

“Yup.” Hannie nodded. I had turned around and we were walking back to our houses.

“Then,” Hannie went on, “I said, ‘Scott, we are such good friends now, I think we should get married.’ And he said, ‘Are you kidding?’ And I said, ‘No.’ And he said, ‘We are not old enough to get married.’ And I said, ‘But I’m in love with you.’ And you know what Scott did?”

I shook my head. “No. What?” I was fascinated.

“He said, ‘Ew, gross.’ And then his brother started singing, ‘Hannie and Scott, sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G.’ ”

“First comes love,” I continued, “then comes marriage — ”

“Karen, you don’t have to finish the song,” said Hannie. “I know it myself, thank you.”
