Justin lightly tugged the reins, and Jasper immediately came to a stop. Aiden looked like he was on the verge of pouting, and a smile tugged at his mouth. He couldn’t help it.

He loved that Aiden enjoyed riding so much. He hadn’t known him for long, but he sensed that he wasn’t normally this animated. Hell, this was the happiest he’d seen him, and the sight warmed his heart like nothing had before.

And he’d had a hand in bringing it out of him. It made him feel like he was on top of the world.

You feel it now too, don’t you? his owl asked. You feel like he’s ours.

I do. I still don’t understand it, but I do.

“Do we have to stop now?”

“Yeah, we’ve done enough for the day. If you stay in the saddle too long, you’ll get sore, especially since you haven’t ridden a horse before. But we can do this again next week.”

“You promise?”

The doubt in Aiden’s blue eyes broke his heart—and told him so much about his past, all at the same time. Making sure not to break eye contact, he answered with as much reassurance and confidence as he could, hoping he’d hear it in his voice.

“Of course. I will never say anything I don’t mean, Aiden. I’ll never lie to you.”

And he knew what Aiden was feeling hadn’t come from Cambry. He’d bet his half of the ranch on it. He’d already thought that her ex had done a lot of damage, and every moment he spent with them confirmed it.

After he helped Aiden down, he showed him how to take care of Jasper after a ride—even if it had only been a slow walk around the pasture. Caring for the horses was just as important as riding them.

The whole time, he snuck glances at the porch, barely able to take his eyes off Cambry. When she’d stepped out of her car, her curly, strawberry blonde hair up in a ponytail, wearing a t-shirt, worn jeans, and sneakers, he swore his heart stopped.

He’d never seen her in anything other than work clothes. And today… well, today she looked like she belonged on the ranch, like this was her home, too—and it was a damned good look on her.

He shouldn’t be thinking like this. The last thing he needed was to fall for her when she wasn’t his mate—but there was a little voice inside him, telling him it was too late.

He was already falling for her.

Forcing himself to look away, he concentrated on showing Aiden how to brush Jasper. But then the
