Chapter 19

Elias finished wiping the last table and put the rag in the pan, carrying the heavy load of dirty dishes back to the kitchen.

“This is the last one,” he said as he walked in.

Peter had gone home thirty minutes ago, and Elias had actually been supposed to go home even earlier. But he wasn’t going to let Jane stay and finish up by herself.

He couldn’t believe that she worked from the time the diner opened until it closed at night, all day every day.

She usually took a few hours in the middle of the afternoon when things were slow, after her daughters got home from school, to check on them, look at their homework, and talk about their day.

Then the girls came down to the diner and ate supper down there.

Jane often stopped what she was doing and ate with them, if things weren’t too busy.

Otherwise, she was on her feet, constantly working.

“That’s fantastic. I am definitely ready to be done today,” she said, putting the last pot away and wiping the stove.

He dragged his feet because he’d gotten used to walking her out.

Maybe it was his imagination, but she seemed to like it when he did.

Typically they got done together, and he had to admit that was partly his timing. He did it on purpose.

“You know you don’t have to wait.” She didn’t look around at him as she put the garbage bag back in the garbage can.

“I know.”

An animal sound shattered the silence that had descended.

“What was that?” he said automatically, thinking it sounded like an elephant that had a cold.

The sound came again.

“I’m pretty sure that’s Billy. Sounds like he’s right out front.” Jane raised her brows at him and gave him a look that said she had no idea what was going on.

“Should we check on him? He sounds sick. Or like he’s in some kind of distress.”

She huffed a little laugh. “That’s the way cows sound when they bawl, but it is kind of weird that he’s doing it and it sounds like it’s right outside my door.”

“That is strange.” He thought it was probably silly of him to ask if Billy would break the window trying to get in. It would just show that he knew nothing about animals. She didn’t seem to be worried about it, and surely it wasn’t going to be a problem, or she would have said something.

“I’m going to grab an apple, just in case,” Jane said as he turned to walk out.

“An apple?” He couldn’t help it. He stopped and turned around to look at her, thinking she might be a little crazy. “What are you going to do? Throw it at him?”

“No. Sometimes cows like apples. Not all cows. I think it just depends on how adventurous they are if they’ve never had one.”

“I wouldn’t have given any cow the label of adventurous, but if you say so.”

“I do.” She grinned at him, and he couldn’t help himself, and he grinned back.

It was funny the way she made him laugh.
