Chapter Eighteen

‘Looking gorgeous, Pol, who are you meeting today?’

Polly looked striking, with her deep brown eyes similar to Marcus, but instead of Marcus’s rich brown hair, she had long red hair flowing down her back. Remembering what she had done with Polly’s brother yesterday, Sophie wiped down the bar as she tried not to blush, or look guilty, or feel in any way awkward. It wasn’t going well.

‘He’s called Ryan, and we’ve been chatting for a little while. He seems a little too good to be true, but today’s the big face-to-face. Do you like?’ Polly straightened her black dress. It was perfect, not too much for a first date meet in a bar, but it made her red hair stand out, and her red ankle boots were to die for.

‘You look beautiful, Pol,’ Paige said as Polly grinned.

‘He must be good, you’ve not bought a new dress for any of your dates in a while,’ Sophie mused.

Polly looked embarrassed. ‘Well, he seems nice anyway, but it’s not a big deal.’

‘As long as you’re having fun that’s the main thing. The dress is for Ryan, right?’ Sophie raised an eyebrow.

‘I don’t know what you’re talking about,’ Polly said, her face tightening.

‘She’s wondering if the dress is really for Bailey,’ Paige said in her usual cut-through-the-bull way. Sophie slapped her arm.

‘Shut up, you. So what does this Ryan look like? What do you know about him so far?’

Deciding to ignore Paige, Polly shook her head. ‘He’s about six foot, he works in the computer tech industry but I don’t know what specifically, but I know that he does well because he’s just bought a flat, and on his profile picture he looks nice, a little bit like a less defined Hemsworth, you know?’

‘Wow, he sounds fantastic.’ And nothing at all like Bailey, Sophie thought.

‘So what time is he due?’ Paige had moved round to the back of the bar, messing around on her iPad as she spoke.

‘He’s due any minute . . . oh, there he is.’ With that Polly jumped off the bar stool and went over to the other side of the room to meet him.

‘Bang on eight o’clock. Do you think he waited outside to be that perfectly on time?’ Paige enquired.

Sophie studied Paige. ‘You don’t like him, do you?’

‘I’m sure he’s nice enough, but he’s not for Polly. She’d get bored with someone that straight-laced, that together. She’d run rings around him in no time. He’s no animal lover, Polly needs a cat person in her life.’

Sophie looked at Paige, puzzled, but then they both turned to watch as Ryan held out the chair for her and tucked it in as Polly sat down. It was a bit formal and old school, but some people went for that, Sophie supposed. Now that Paige had said her piece though, she was inclined to think that maybe this was another boring one. In fact, since Polly had reopened her dating apps they had all been boring, steady, serious types.
