“Does Grandma or your dad know you’re here?”

Two nodding heads in reply. “They said to come find you.”

I adore my niece and nephew but, damn, their timing is nearly as bad as their father and Grayson’s was the other night. At least these two are adorable cockblockers.

I’m sure Mom’s already curious after my vague message earlier stating I’d be bringing my intern along for the family holiday weekend. Yeah, last-minute college friends, business associates and girlfriends she’s gladly hosted before between the four of us and Dad but she’ll likely see through my feeble claim of work.

The kids are begging me to help persuade their father they need a pet frog while their captive croaks bleakly when Mia joins us. I’m tempted to skip dinner. She’s radiant in a summery green dress which compliments her fiery hair and nearly matches her bewitching eyes. It’s only awareness of Ryder and Jill which keeps me in line.

Introductions are made and Mia immediately makes friends when she finds an app on her phone that helps narrow down what species of frog they’ve found.

“You like frogs? The penguins will be jealous.”

She grins at my teasing. “We had a pond back home as I said and I can love a variety of creatures,” she adds sweetly before returning her attention to our amphibious guest. “This guy’s kind of rare and it says he really loves being in water. This is a nice home you’ve made but I’ll bet he misses his pad… or lily pad.”

Jill giggles over pad and lily pad but Mia’s words move Ryder to declare they should release their captive back to his homeland which his sister soon agrees with, though with some sadness.

Mia offers to walk outside with them while I get ready for dinner and then sucker punches me in the heart by quietly taking a sniffling Jill’s hand as Ryder leads the way outdoors to return Mr. Froggy to the wilds. I know Theo’s trying and Mom helps as much as she can but it hurts knowing they’re growing up without their mother.

In the shower, my thoughts keep spinning over Mia, a common occurrence anymore. I wasn’t kidding earlier when I said I’d hate to wash her scent off me. The taste of her, the sounds she made and her beautiful body laid bare for me, these memories will stick with me forever. I was delusional thinking I could bring her here and behave myself, wasn’t I? No matter how eager she might be, I’m the one in the position of authority over her. What the hell am I doing?

Dressed and ready, I join Mia and the kids outside and they’re asking about walking up to the house together. In no frame of mind to refuse the three of them anything, I take Jill’s other hand and we set off with Ryder dashing ahead, laughing and encouraging us to catch him.

I sense her nervousness as we walk but, with the kids’ excited chatter as we climb the front steps together, she has her smile in place when my mother opens the front door.
