Devan had hoped for a bit of a lie in on Sunday morning, but he woke to find Jonty staring into his face looking worried.

“Thank God you’re awake.” Jonty blinked.

“I think the constant pinching of my arm managed that.”

“What? I did it twice.”

Devan raised his eyebrows.

“Okay, maybe more than twice.”

Devan pulled him into his arms. “What’s wrong?”

“Have I overdone it, not done enough, shouldn’t have done it in the first place?” Jonty chewed his nail.

Devan tugged his hand from his mouth. “Everything is great. You’ve been thoughtful and imaginative.”

“I can hear a but.”

“No you can’t.”

“No, the but is mine. But what would you have done differently? And don’t say nothing because I won’t believe you.”

Devan dragged his fingers through Jonty’s hair. “One thing I wondered was if there was a way to block off part of the car park and take guests on a winding path through all the things you intend to put out there. It could be lit up at the sides. Something that would shine through the fog.”

“That’s a great idea. I knew you’d be useful for something.”

Devan mock-scowled. “Watch it!”

“I love you.”

“That is not a Get Out of Jail Free card.”

“Hold out your hand.”

When Devan held it out palm down, Jonty turned it the other way up and put a card there. Devan laughed. It was a Get Out of Jail Free card. “How long have you been waiting to use that?”

“I bought a whole pack. Amazon is a wormhole. Every time I piss you off, I’m going to use one. There are 32 in the pack so I should have enough for…a week.”

“Forever,” Devan said at the same time.

“I really do love you.”

“I know. And while I think you’ve probably spent enough on this event, what about hiring metal fence panels for either side of the way in? We could have signs on them saying Keep Out or Do not touch.” Devan grabbed his phone.

“Or Abandon hope all ye who enter here or Not only will this kill you, it will hurt a lot until you’re dead.” Jonty beamed at him.

“Any more?”

“Is there life after death? Come in here and find out.”

Devan smiled. “If you’re reading this, you’re blissfully unaware of what is creeping up behind you.”

Jonty laughed. “That’s a good one. I can make the signs. What about Beware of wolves or This sign is just a distraction?”

“They work too. Remember when you tried to kill me but I got away? I remember too.”

“I want to write all these down.” Jonty tapped into his list document. “I’ll order some plastic board that I can stencil on.”

“This fencing looks good.” Devan showed Jonty his phone. “We can hire it.”

“Perfect. We need six lots of that size. See if they can deliver on Thursday. Oh look, they have a metal arch double gateway as well. We can drape it with fake ivy and snakes and spiders.”

Devan placed the order. “No more,” he said. “You have enough.”

“Have I gone over budget? I tried not to.”

“You’re fine. We’re going to need to store all this afterwards.
