Chapter 29

Al Jazeera Live News, Cairo, Egypt, 7:00 pm Local Time

‘Breaking news live from Cairo,’ reported polished and trusted Egyptian anchorman Mohammed Mohyedin. He wore a tailored navy single-breasted suit and a sharp red tie, which set off his combed dark, wavy hair nicely. Together with his cameraman, he was positioned at a high vantage point that overlooked the Sphinx and its enclosure.

Tonight, it seemed he was going to deliver the story of the century.

‘Moments ago, we received news of a hostage situation deep within the Great Sphinx. Yes, you heard that right. A group of hostages has been forced at gunpoint into a cave system below the structure, through an entrance beside the right paw of the Sphinx, which is a location at which many historians believed there to be a network of secret tunnels. It looks as if these theories have now proved true.’

The cameraman turned the camera away from Mohammed and zoomed in on the opening in the ground among the timber floors around the Sphinx’s paw, then slowly panned back to the host.

‘The man behind this hostage situation has been identified as Dimitri Panos, a former employee of the French intelligence agency DGSE, where he obtained the rank of major. He is known by his peers to be a ruthless and dangerous individual with high-level combat skills. He is working with an accomplice, but the identity of this individual is currently unknown. Footage shows him wearing a balaclava to hide his face. We are uncertain if any demands have yet been made, but we do know that four guards were found dead, their bodies mutilated, near the entrance.

‘We also know that eighteen unharmed hostages have been taken, and they have been guided inside this vast underground network of tunnels here on the Giza Plateau.’

Mohammed touched his earpiece and stopped to listen, concentration written over his face.

‘I’ve been given instructions,’ he said, stopping to hear some more. ‘We have been given approval by the authorities to show footage sent to us by the perpetrator, Dimitri Panos. It is a little disturbing, so now would be the time to switch channels if kids are present. Here we go.’

The stream started. It showed a line of prisoners holding hands in a giant chain entering the limestone-walled tunnels. Some of the young children cried as they stepped deeper into the darkness, lit sporadically by portable lights emitting an orange hue.

In the narrow corridor, a male hostage began to argue with the man concealed behind his mask, and suddenly, the screen abruptly cut to the Al Jazeera News station logo. ‘Oh my God,’ blurted Mohammed.

Seconds later, the edit cut back to the detainees in a straight-line formation. Many of them were sobbing now. In the distance, there was a blurry view of a body left behind, executed, it appeared, for his disobedience.

Leaving seventeen hostages.

The camera panned around, showing the captives stepping into an expansive open space. Then the person holding the camera turned it on themselves, and Dimitri Panos, the mastermind, came into view.
