“Are you absolutely certain?” Joe asked in the privacy of the cloakroom, “certain beyond possible doubt?”

“Yes, I am, sir. There’s only one person in the world whose knuckles crackle like that and that’s Kramer, the S.S. Intelligence Agent who was in charge of the prison from which we rescued Harry Arkwright; sorry, I mean Lieutenant Arkwright, sir.”

“Yes, but there could be lots of people who have this peculiarity under stress.”

“But not also of his enormous size, sir. And there’s another thing…”

“Yes?”

“He recognised me.”

Joe whistled.

“Certain?”

“Positive. That’s why he rushed out.”

Joe paused and strode up and down the washplace for a full minute.

“I know that Alex is full of spies: we’ve all been warned about it, but what do we do now?”

“I reckon that we’ve got to act on this, sir. Kramer can’t be here for nothing. As Captain ‘S’ told us, Kramer is one of Himmler’s ace spies. Rommel wants to know when General Alexander is going to strike and where, so this information must be vital. What more natural than to employ a top-level spy to find out — Kramer, for instance?”

Joe slapped his thigh and made for the door.

“I’ll go to the bar and get into conversation with the Pilot Officer. I’ll ask his name and unit and give it to Intelligence. If it’s genuine there can be no harm done. But if it’s phoney…” Joe smiled, “anything might happen. In a few minutes, re-join the Sub and wait for me.”

“Right, sir. Have a bet on it?”

“Yes. If you’re right, you take the first week up in the rest camp, skiing at Beirut.”

Peter grinned.

“Done, sir! I’ll go and order my skis.”

It was ten o’clock when they left the Officers’ Club. Joe had engaged the pilot in conversation, and the officer had almost truculently supplied him with his name and unit. However, Joe had handled the affair tactfully, and was convinced that the pilot had no inkling of his purpose.

“You two get back to the boat, Number One. I’m going up to Army Headquarters. So long!”

“So long, sir. Don’t be late.”

Joe grinned.

“I’m going strictly on army business, Number One, don’t forget that,” and he chuckled as he disappeared into the darkness.
