CHAPTER 13

Jesse

* * *

“I’ve only seen your house full of people,” says Savannah as we walk inside. It was only a ten-minute walk down the beach to my place. I opened the back door and let us in that way.

“It looks bigger,” she says, spinning in the living room. The sleek, modern look of my beach house suddenly looks cold in comparison to Savannah’s tiny house that she shares with two other people. I miss the wind chime that’s made with sea glass the exact shade of her eyes. She stops spinning and shivers.

“You’re cold,” I say. “Come with me.” I take her hand, the same way I did at the party, and she doesn’t fight it. I lead her up the stairs, across the landing, and down the hallway to my bedroom. She steps inside.

“This is better than I remember it, too,” she says. “It’s huge.” She catches sight of the balcony and heads straight for it, like a child. She slides open the huge double French doors and steps outside as I follow behind her. The backdrop of the balcony is a sky lit with stars meeting the dark expanse of the sea; it seems to go on forever.

“This is beautiful,” she whispers. “Really, Jess. It’s perfect.”

“I’ve seen better views,” I murmur, and she rolls her eyes but I see her cheeks redden. She shivers again, and I lead her inside, closing the door behind us. Having her in my bedroom again is driving me crazy. She walks over to my bed on her tiptoes, resting a hand on the dark wood baseboard. I walk toward her, pulling her hair over one shoulder so I can kiss her neck. I reach around and knead her hips at the same time, nudging her head to the side. She arches her back against me.

“Shower with me,” she says, turning to face me, and I raise an eyebrow at her.

“If you try and tell me one more time that we need to take it slow or be cautious, I’m going to kill you,” she says, reading me perfectly. “Don’t second guess this.” And for once in my life, I don’t analyze or question or hesitate. I just do what she says and I let her lead me across the dark floors through the archway to the bathroom.

“Wow,” says Savannah. “I should have guessed.”

The bathroom is easily as large as my bedroom, all marble and black granite. The shower is glass with showerheads on two walls, plus a bench and shelf carved into the marble. The bathtub is separate, a huge Jacuzzi with steps leading to its raised position, with a huge window behind that looks out over the ocean. The sinks spout water out of dark, honey-colored amethysts and the enormous mirror illuminates both of us from head to toe.

“Too much?” I ask, but she shakes her head.

“It’s insane, but it’s beautiful. I love it.”

“The floors are heated,” I say, reaching for a box on the wall. “We can turn them on so your feet won’t be cold when you get out.
