Chapter 10

“She is the same woman you knew from before,” he told her quietly as he watched her twisting her fingers together. He had made the argument that it would be best if she came with him and had persuaded her to pack something to sleep in. “Not that you will be needing it,” he had told her teasingly.

“That was years ago and we have all changed.” She evened out her breath and stared in front of her. He turned into the now paved lane that would take them to his place. He had installed streetlights and did a lot of renovations along the way.

He turned into the driveway and the automatic gate slid open. He stopped at the fountain that was spewing forth water from the mouth of what looked like a cherubim and stopped just before he came to the front door. The place was unrecognizable! The gardens were vibrant with a profusion of flowers of all descriptions and she remembered that his mother had a passion for them. The pear-shaped pool could be glimpsed from where they sat and she saw chairs strewn around the edge of it. “I want to take you on a tour before we have dinner. I think we will be eating outside.”

He turned off the engine and got out of the vehicle, coming around to open her door for her to get out. Taking her hand in his he walked her to the front door which was opened by a woman in a stiff black uniform. “Maude, this is Kirsten Brinkley, the love of my life. Kirsten, this is Maude, housekeeper and member of the family.”

The woman gave a glimmer of a smile and extended a hand. “Welcome, Kirsten.”

“Thank you.”

“Ms. Madeline is in her sitting room. We had not expected you until later.”

“I decided to make it earlier. I want to show Kirsten around.”

“Dinner will be by the pool,” the woman told them as she went back to the kitchen.

Jayden tucked her hand through his arm and led the way through the maze of passages. “It’s unbelievable,” she said quietly.

“I wanted something different but somewhat familiar,” he murmured, pleased at her reaction. Graceful furnishings, thick lush carpeting, coveted artworks dotting the silken wallpapers made her eyes widened. He knocked on a door to his right and pushed it open. Madeline McCoy had not changed much. She had passed her toffee-colored hair to her son and the dark blue eyes. Jayden had gotten his square chin and height from his dad.

“My dear!” She came forward with hands outstretched. “You are even more beautiful than when you were a teen.” She pulled Kirsten in for a hug and enveloped her in a warm embrace. “It’s so good to see you.”

“Thank you. You do not look a day older than when I last saw you all those years ago,” Kirsten told her.

“Bless you for saying that.” She looked at her son. “Could you go and get us something to drink darling?”

He hesitated a moment and then placing a kiss on Kirsten’s forehead he made his way out.
