I NEEDED TO find out what was on that flash drive, but my first priority was to see Rick Middleton. The bank manager tipped someone off to Sarahâs request to access the safe deposit box; I was certain of it. Middleton might lead me to the three men involved in the car crash, the one who had been in the getaway car and the two who had driven the SUV into us, and then searched Sarah and me for the flash drive. I swung my legs off the bed and stood up, holding onto the bed for support. The room whirled around me. I steadied myself and took a deep breath before letting go. Bad idea. I stumbled back onto the bed.
I ached all over and my eyes were heavy. Damn it. What did they give me? Iâll rest a few minutes and try again. I lay back on the bed and closed my eyes. When I opened them, two hours had passed. Still feeling groggy, I phoned DuPont and told him that I had been in an automobile accident with Sarah Goodman in the car.
âWe need to talk,â I said. âGet your ass over here.â
âIâm on my way.â
When DuPont arrived, I was sitting up in bed. My head had cleared, and the room had stopped spinning.
âHowâs Sarah?â DuPont asked.
âI havenât seen her, but the doctor said sheâs doing fine. Can you check on her? I assume her mother is with her.â
âWhy was Sarah with you in the car?â
âI saw Delores and Sarah this morning. Delores told me that no one had searched the house for anything of her husbandâs that might provide a lead, which I found odd. When I asked her where Dennis kept valuables, she took me to a built-in safe and opened it. Inside was an envelope with my name, address, and phone number on it. There was a safe deposit box key in it, nothing else. Sarah went with me to their branch bank and opened the safe deposit box. A computer flash drive was the only thing there.â
âWhereâs the drive now?â
âI have it. The policeman who was just here said that according to witnesses he interviewed, the men who crashed into us dragged Sarah and me out of the car and were searching us when they heard a siren and jumped into a car that appeared to have been waiting for them. They took off before they could find it. The flash drive was in my jacket pocket. I checkedâitâs still there.â I motioned toward the plastic bag containing my clothes.
DuPont looked at the bag and stroked his chin.
âDonât even think about it,â I said. âIâm not letting it out of my sight. This may sound a little far-fetched, but when Sarah asked to access the safe deposit box, the bank manager made a call. He said it was to make sure there were no legal issues with her accessing her dead fatherâs safe deposit box. I donât know who he called, but it was no coincidence that SUV crashed into us.
