Chapter Five
Morgan kept Ernest away for a while, sitting with him in the restaurant to calm down with a coffee. Ernest didnât think he needed calming, but after a while, he realized that he was still simmering with anger. Morgan had read his emotions better than Ernest had himself.
Stephenâs attitude towards Jacira was concerning and outrageous. Some of the townspeople did see Jacira as an outsider, even now, and a few were still a little nervous about her, but Jacira was generally accepted due to her healing abilities and her kindly behavior. Ernest knew his brothers, especially, were fond of her. So, to have this obvious hatred for a woman who had barely said a cross word to anyone was bewildering.
Something else was going on. Ernest could feel it in his gut. Stephen wasnât just talking like a man who was used to getting his own way. It was on a much more personal level. Morgan had suggested that Stephen might have wanted Jacira for himself and she turned him down, so he was behaving as a scorned suitor. That left a nasty taste in Ernestâs mouth. Jacira wouldnât see Stephen as anything romantic; she had said that he was a person you couldnât trust to breathe in the correct way, never mind with anything that would require any sort of effort. She had a bad feeling about him from the first moment they met.
She wouldnât have allowed him to court her, would she? Ernest couldnât see that happening. Maybe Morgan was right; Stephen wanted to take her as his own, but Jacira spurned his advances. It was the only reason he could think of because his actions showed this was much more than a simple dislike over her heritage.
That just made Ernest angry all over again. Stephen was good at causing trouble and keeping himself out of it. Carla certainly complained about his attitude and she wanted to tell him where to go. But she loved Daniel, and Daniel was eager for his brotherâs affection so she kept her mouth shut. It was a mess.
It was almost dark when Ernest headed back to the surgery. He had some paperwork to do and a few patients to see; they were known to walk in whenever he wasnât there. Then to complain when he turned up. Ernest wasnât about to tie himself to his desk so his patients could see him almost immediately. They would have to wait.
It was quiet in the surgery when Ernest returned. The candles had been lit and the waiting room was empty. Jaciraâs door was partially open and he could hear someone moving around inside. He headed over and knocked gently.
âCome in.â
Ernest entered, and found Jacira sitting at her desk, her head bent as she wrote. Her hair had been tucked behind her ear, and he could see the scars in the flickering candlelight. They snaked up under her hairline, down her cheek, and curled around her ear and jaw before going down her neck and disappearing under the collar of her tunic.
