CHAPTER NINE

LAYLA

I wipe the sweat from my brow as I hang another load of wet laundry on the clothesline that crosses the room. It’s incredibly warm in here. The shelter likes to keep the heat on to dry the clothes faster. I’ve been in here for hours, working non-stop.

The shelter is so full, there is more laundry here than people know what to do with. I’ve been working on it since I got here, washing, drying, folding, and returning clothes to their owners. I have one last load to finish before I leave.

I know Jacob is going to be upset I didn’t come home in time, but he’s working today anyway. He probably needs the time alone. I know he’s been worrying too much about me to worry about himself.

I finish hanging the clothes, toss another basket full into the washing machine, and set to work folding another. The dryer here stopped working due to the amount of clothes it was cycling through, so everyone has to wait on them to air dry.

I am about halfway through folding the latest load of dry clothes when a woman walks in. I recognize her immediately. She used to tend the gardens for Cassian.

She’s a pretty lady, a few years older than me. Her blonde hair is dirty, pulled into a loose bun on top of her head. She has dirt streaked across one of her cheeks.

“I was just checking on my clothes,” she says shyly when I meet her gaze.

I offer her a small smile. “Your name's Claire, right?” I ask. She nods, folding her hands together in front of her. I can tell she still isn’t used to being free from the expectations of Cassian and other village leaders. She wasn’t married before, as no one had ever chosen her when she was younger. Instead of being exiled, she was lucky enough to be given a job and a purpose. However, I’m not sure I consider anyone who has to work for Cassian lucky.

“I’m folding yours now,” I tell her. “I can bring them to you when I’m done if you’d like.”

She shifts on her feet, looking at the floor for a moment before looking up at me. “Actually, I’ll help you, if that’s alright.”

My eyes widen with a bit of shock. No one has offered me any help today, nor did I ask for it. I wanted to feel like I was doing something that would help the people here, the ones who likely blamed me for their current situation. I wasn’t surprised no one had offered.

“Of course,” I tell her after a moment. I move the basket to the center of the table so it is between us. She approaches the table and grabs a shirt to fold.

We work in silence for several minutes. I steal a few glances at her while we fold, noticing that she is chewing on her lower lip and frowning. I can tell she wants to say something, but I don’t push her.

Finally, she speaks.
