J.R.

“You’re sulking worse than ever. Dude.” Cort sidles up next to me at the bar and hands me a pint of my favorite double IPA. Granted I helped create this recipe when Cort built the brewery, but still, it helps a little to soothe my nerves.

“Don’t dude me.” I grumble and swig back the beer.

“Come, have a seat.” Cort wraps his arm around my shoulders and forces me to turn around where the shooting squad is all sitting at a table watching me.

Tres, Luna, Amelia, and even Leigha who has her head buried in her phone texting someone.

I allow Cort to lead me over to the table. Spinning the chair around, I straddle it backwards and tap Leigha’s phone. “When we do we get to meet this mystery fella?”

Leigha smirks at me and places the phone face down on the table in front of her. “Oh no, this isn’t about me today. This is about you.”

“What about me?” I glance around the table. “What did I do?”

“I don’t know what you did, or didn’t do, but Bonnie has the same mopey look on her face.” Luna looks from me to Amelia.

“She won’t talk to us, but I know it has something to do with you.”

Sipping my beer, I don’t respond, but look around the table at my brothers, and Bonnie’s best friends, all sitting still, focused on me. I take another swig of confidence and set the glass down on the table surrendering to the inevitable.

“I’m in love with her.”

“What!?” Leigha gasps surprised. The others just smirk, knowingly.

“And what are you going to do about it?” Amelia asks.

“Hell, if I know. I tried flowers and surprising her at work–”

“Thaaat’s what happened.” Luna looks at Amelia and raises her eyes in a secret conversation held without words in the way that only women and longtime friends can do.

“Yup, and you didn’t react well, did you?” Amelia asks.

“No.” I say matter-of-factly.

“What? What’s wrong with her job?” Tres asks, looking back and forth between me and Amelia.

Amelia waves her hand at him to brush him off. “Not important.”

“Listen, I know she really likes you.” Luna says.

“And we saw the chemistry between you at the party.” Leigha adds. “So that’s why we’re gathered here today. We’re going to help you get out of your own way.”

The next day, after conspiring with her friends and my brothers, we have a plan. A grand gesture. A peace offering.

And I’ll beg if I need to. I really do love her and am not going to let her push me away.
