Chapter Ten

Jared woke the next morning with a cleaver between his eyes. At least, that’s what it felt like anyway. He remembered walking Charlie back to her door. Remembered holding her in his arms, giving her two orgasms. Feeling her respond so beautifully to his touch, watching her face as she came—nothing felt more powerful or made a man feel more alive than knowing the woman he wanted shattered at his touch, came alive in his arms.

It had nearly killed him to walk away when every fiber of his being wanted to stay, slide between her silken thighs and spend the entire night showing her that he cared—that they could have a future together. Instead, he’d walked away, knowing she needed time. Hell, he needed to distance himself, remember where they’d been and think about where they could go, what they could be to each other if they gave in to temptation. Charlie stole his heart four years ago, with his first glance at her beautiful smiling face. Finding her again only intensified those feelings.

Hell, he’d never been one to believe in love at first sight, yet that’s exactly what happened. One look and he’d fallen fast and he’d fallen hard. Seeing her again here in Vegas felt like a blessing and a curse.

So many secrets and lies had been exposed during their talk at dinner, though he knew there were too many things still unspoken, but he wanted—no, he needed—to explore his reawakened feelings for Charlie. Could they possibly have a shot at being together, grasping at the happiness they might share? Maybe—if he put all his cards on the table. Then again, things moved quicker than lightning around Charlie, always had.

Walking away took every ounce of strength he possessed, but he knew it was the right thing, the only thing. As much as he wanted her in his arms, to be buried in her sweetness and be consumed in the fire burning between them, he knew waiting was right. Instead of jumping head first into sex, though damn it he wanted to, he’d been the gentleman and walked away, but not before savoring the memory of watching her in the throes of passion. Amazing.

Back in his room he’d finished the now empty bottle of whiskey, drowning his sorrows and cursing his brother. How could he have been so wrong about everything?

Damn Phillip and his lies. Every word he’d said about the breakup with Charlie was one more lie on top of the rest. Would he ever be able to believe a word out of his brother’s mouth again?

Four years. Wasted.

He got up, staggered and grabbed the headboard before righting himself and headed to the bathroom, eyeing the tiny motel coffee maker along the way. Nope, the little machine couldn’t produce nearly enough caffeine to make a dent in his hangover. Then again, he deserved every single painful hammering blow struck behind his eyelids, every tortuous screeching sound an unending pounding in his brain.

What a total ass I’ve been.
