You know this is a boundary problem, right? I do know that. And honestly, it freaks me out to see kids who are âbest friendsâ with their parents. When you get older, sure. Parents can act and feel more like friends. But no matter how old you are, first and foremost, your parents are your parents. And with that certain dynamic comes certain boundaries.
A lot of the time this extreme closeness is what your parents need in order to feel like a good parent, or the kind of parent they wish to be. But it is not what you need. So, in short, itâs about their ego more than it is about what you need. It is very seductive to fall into this sort of a relationship with a parent because, like a best friend, they are interested in having a good time and avoiding conflict. But that means avoiding setting boundaries that are challenging, but good for your development. Like we talked about earlier in this chapter, your interpersonal relationship with your parents is going to teach you about how to have relationships with other people throughout your whole life. Parents can be fun, sure. But they need to be there to guide you toward the larger goal: the development of you. And if itâs a party all of the time, where is the push for growth?
