CHAPTER SEVEN

IT WAS a relief to get out of the crowded house. Prue took a deep breath of night air as they walked down the steps.

Nat was holding her hand, but the moment Sabrina closed the door on them he gave it back to her like a parcel. Without the clasp of his fingers it felt cold and empty at the end of her arm, and Prue didn’t know what to do with it. She tried it in various positions before folding her arms and tucking it out of sight at her waist as she pretended to look for a taxi.

‘We might as well walk,’ she suggested in a creditably cool voice when no yellow light appeared. ‘It’s not that far.’

They walked without touching through the summer night. To Nat, London seemed almost as busy by night as during the day. Plenty of shops were still open, and drinkers spilled out of the pubs to stand on the pavement in cheerful groups. The traffic continued to growl along the roads and, once, a police car zipped past, blue light flashing and siren whooping. Nat felt a long way from Mathison.

In spite of the noise and activity around them it seemed, to Prue, that the two of them were sealed off from it all, trapped in a bubble of constrained silence where there was nothing to keep the memory of the kiss they had shared at bay. It shimmered between them, unavoidable, unforgettable, making it impossible to think about anything else.

‘Thank you for earlier,’ said Prue awkwardly at last, unable to bear the tension any longer.

‘What for?’

For kissing me. That was what she wanted to say, but her nerve failed her at the last minute. ‘For saying what you did,’ she said instead.

She felt Nat’s quick glance. ‘Don’t mention it,’ he said in a colourless voice.

Prue wished that she hadn’t mentioned it, but she couldn’t just leave it there. She forced a smile and tried to speak lightly. ‘Did Cleo have a word with you too?’

‘Cleo?’ Nat sounded surprised. ‘No. What about?’

‘She’s worried that we’re not affectionate enough with each other.’ Prue glanced at him. ‘I assumed that she’d had a go at you too while I was in the bath.’

So that was why she had responded so willingly to his kiss. Nat was conscious of a sinking feeling in his stomach. She had just been trying to convince her sister that they really were engaged. Well, what had he expected? Had he really thought that there could have been any other reason for her to melt into his arms like that?

He watched a double-decker bus go past. ‘I gathered Cleo had some doubts,’ he said carefully, not quite lying. If Prue had a good excuse for kissing him so sweetly, he might as well pretend that he had approached the matter in a similarly cold-blooded spirit.

There was a pause.

‘At least she’s convinced now,’ said Prue with a laugh that didn’t quite come off.

‘Yes, she is.’

Of course Cleo was convinced. Who
