Chapter Eleven
Wysteria
Thankfully, he does not put me in more restraints, probably because he knows he can overpower me easily. I walk freely, though Iâm between two elven guards. The staircase leading up out of the dungeon is soggy, the walls wet and mossy. When we reach the top, I let out a heavy breath. Itâs then I realize Iâve been holding it. As I breathe in again, I catch a whiff of mildew and something elseâmetal? Itâs difficult to tell.
From the dungeon, they lead me down a hall. The decor is subtle, including white walls with a delicate garland of pink roses along the top. Silver sconces twinkle, bathing the way with light. The floor is white marble, and the ceiling is too.
My shoes and those of the guards ring loud until we arrive at another set of steps. They curve and twirl sharply up and up and up. The further we go, the sicker my stomach gets. This all feels familiar somehow.
In Redyrinâs realm, she kept me in a tall tower. It was more rustic than this, but still. I feel like Iâm going back in time instead of forward, and I donât like it. Without preamble, I stop, causing the guard behind me to bump into my backside.
âHey,â he growls. âGet moving.â He shoves me, but I hold my ground.
âI wonât go another step,â I say. What Iâm hoping my stubbornness will accomplish is unclear to me, but it doesnât matter.
âThe hard way it is then,â he says and throws me over his shoulder.
I donât fight. Itâs useless, but I do search for some bare skin, a place I can use my magic. There isnât an opening. Heâs completely covered with garb.
When we stop, heâs breathing heavily, but I donât care. It should be difficult to imprison me. I hear the first guard unlock a door, and the one holding me whisks me inside and drops me on my butt on the hard wooden floor.
Smarting, I roll onto my knees before rising.
The guards are back at the door, the first one leering. âTharthus will be in shortly.â His eyes rake down my body with a look that says he wants to get to know me better. âGet yourself cleaned up, or Iâll be back to do it myself.â He licks his lips.
On instinct, I wrap my arms around my body.
He laughs, deep and guttural. âThatâs what I thought.â He closes the door, locking it behind him.
I listen to the echo of their steps as they retreat. Then I sink to the floor and cry. Because itâs like the last several months never happened. No rescue or college. No falling in love with Austin. No meeting Sage or taking classes or jungle juice. No freaking freedom. Iâm back in a tower. Imprisoned for my magic. For the first time, I wish to be different. Anyone but who and what I am.
âWhat a waste,â I eke out between sobs.
The voices inside my head start up again. They hiss things I donât understand and some that I do.
