CHAPTER EIGHT

IT HAD BEEN a week of unforgettable experiences, from learning to snorkel and paddleboard across the coral reef filled with colourful fish, to kayaking out with Luke across to their own tiny isle where they picnicked and made love in the sand. From visiting tiny picture-perfect resorts, where just a handful of tourists enjoyed the beach bar by the sapphire-blue rock lagoon, to watching turtles on a powder-soft beach.

And now today, their last real day, they were at the beautiful Tucan Bay, the whole curved cove like a huge, private reef-filled swimming pool just for them. After a morning’s swim in the clear blue water they’d enjoyed a long lunch and siesta, and now Luke was back out, snorkelling the reefs. The man never stopped—in more ways than one.

But dinner tonight would be eaten whilst at sea, and by this time tomorrow they’d be docking in Singapore before going their separate ways. Madison had sent an email to the office on the third day at sea, letting her assistant know she was well and safe and asking for her hotel reservations and flight home to be rebooked. She’d spend tomorrow night alone in a hotel and then she’d fly back to London to pick up her normal life, this week nothing but a dream-like interlude.

Normal life. Madison tried not to sigh as reality slowly seeped into her brain. Back to London, to the pretty house in Hampstead where she lived and worked, a house she’d bought three years after founding M, with the money she had made herself.

She’d made the money her parents had squandered too; the difference was that this time she’d chosen her path and her success was hers alone.

But that fact didn’t give her the reassurance it usually did, not even when she let her mind wander through the tastefully decorated rooms of her upstairs maisonette, walls painted in expensive neutral shades named Cold Grave and Winter’s Creep, down the curved stairs to the spacious ground floor offices, suitable for greeting any clients who preferred to come to her. For once the first thought in her mind when she thought of London wasn’t security. It was loneliness.

Maybe it was time she got that dog she kept promising herself. She’d been in London for over a decade; she wasn’t going to move home any time soon.

Wherever home might be.

Enough of this self-pity, she scolded herself. She was in a beautiful place watching a beautiful man glide through the water like some kind of Greek sea god, knowing that tonight he’d make love to her in a suitably god-like way. Of course a week like this couldn’t last for ever. It wasn’t designed to. She’d conceived these weeks to be a way of getting to know each other intimately and in one way that had happened—she was certainly intimately acquainted with every centimetre of Luke’s toned, tanned torso. But she’d also intended these weeks not to be about sex but instead to be a meeting of minds, a chance to talk, really talk, to let each other in.
