Lily followed Betsy’s car, grateful for her support.

Once they turned onto Harper’s Crossing, Betsy pointed to the ranch house and carport in the distance and turned into the rather lengthy driveway. Lily parked next to her.

As Betsy got out of her car, her cell phone rang. She glanced at the screen. “It’s Mrs. Lambert.”

She lifted her cell to her ear and nodded a number of times. “Yes, ma’am. Certainly, that won’t be a problem.”

After disconnecting, Betsy looked at Lily. “I’m so sorry, Lily.”

“She needs your help?”

Betsy nodded. “Will you be okay?”

“Of course, I’ll be fine. I’m proud of you for snagging a job at the lodge. This won’t take long, and I’ll soon be headed back to Matthias’s farm.”

“He seems like a nice guy.” Betsy smiled the same way she used to in high school when they were talking about cute boys.

Lily rolled her eyes. “Betsy, he’s Amish.”

“I know, but he’s still handsome.”

Lily had to agree.

She waved goodbye to Betsy and walked decisively to Kevin’s front step. She hadn’t expected to be nervous as she knocked on his door. She wasn’t worried about her physical well-being, but digging up buried wounds wasn’t easy. She would prefer to keep them hidden and out of sight. Still, after Janice, Mrs. Lambert and Betsy had commented that Kevin continued to spread rumors about her mother’s involvement in Noelle’s murder, Lily had to put a stop to the lies once and for all.

Gathering her courage, she lifted her hand to knock again. The door opened. Kevin stood on the threshold. His eyes widened as he recognized her. He was tall and muscular and still good-looking, although she saw a sadness in his eyes.

“What are you doing here?” His tone was full of vitriol.

“It’s been five years, Kevin, but I understand you’re still spreading rumors about my mother.”

“Give it a rest, Lily.”

She bristled. “How can I when you’re convinced my mother was involved in Noelle’s death.”

“The facts are hard to refute.”

“You don’t know the facts. You jumped to conclusions that were false. I was with my mother that night. We were packing our car. In case you don’t remember, we left Sunview twenty-four hours later.”

“Which was convenient. I told my father to arrest you both and bring you back to stand trial for Noelle’s murder.”

“Your father knew we had nothing to do with her death.”

“Someone saw your mother stop her car and talk to Noelle on a desolate back road that night. Your mother was the last person to see Noelle alive.”

“I was in the car with my mother.” The memory returned and brought with it the pain that Lily had lived with all these years. “My mother wanted to give Noelle a ride. She was cold, the road was dark and she shouldn’t have been walking alone.”

“Your mother heckled her.”

“She did no such thing.”

“Then why did she drive off in a huff?”

“Where are you getting your information? Noelle refused the ride and said she was meeting someone.”

Lily stared at his narrow face and drawn eyes.
