CHAPTER 17
Isaac could not sleep. The night hours dragged out before him. He tried counting sheep, his blessings, the minutes ⦠seconds ⦠but nothing helped. Something had happened when Sophia had last spoken to him, which was unsettling. He had called her his and she had frozen and not fallen into his arms. But who could blame her? How could he look after her as a man should when he could not even leave his bed without the aid of Robert Judd to support him? He would ask Sophia if she was having doubts, if she wanted to wait and see what happened. But the threat of Lucas whisking her off to the other side of the planet was not to be borne.
He felt a waft of stale cold air on his cheeks and knew that he was no longer alone. A slim frame sat next to him on the bed. His senses awoke. Perhaps he had read Sophiaâs reaction wrong? It seemed she had returned to him.
âTell me you are not a spectre, or my disrespectful past come to haunt me?â Isaac whispered in her direction.
Sophia did not say a word but she leaned forward over him, gently so as not to disturb his leg. Oh, how his body ached for her, more than the wound that throbbed and itched in turn. Normally so active, to him this was like purgatory, a penance to behold for his sinful thoughts and desires.
âIt is late,â he said. âYou had better light a lamp.â
She had carried her writing box in as he had requested. He held the paper up to her and then set to dictating a letter of apology to his agents in London for not having been there in person. He continued to ask for a confirmation, by return, the monies now available to him and that his previous orders and purchase had been fulfilled.
Sophia finished writing and looked at him. âAre you going to expand further upon this to me?â she asked him.
âWhen I have my reply all shall be clear and our world can open up to us.â
