Chapter Fifteen

Denise sat up and stretched her aching back. The couch wasn’t made for sleeping. She’d remember that next time. Her hair smelled like smoke. She glanced up at the bare wall. At least she’d accomplished something by sleeping on the couch, although her back didn’t agree.

She heard Connor banging around in the kitchen. Stretching the kinks out of her back, she got up and joined him, grateful to see he’d already brewed a pot of coffee. She poured herself a cup as he looked over his shoulder.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

She shook her head. “No, it was my fault.”

“I see you had a barbecue last night.”

Now that it was over, she could laugh about it. “I may have overdone it.”

“Well, overcooked wedding pictures are my favorite thing on the menu.”

“God, I’m so sorry. It’s just that it seemed to change every time I looked at it.”

Connor came over and wrapped his arm around her. “I told you I’d take it down and put up a new painting if it bothered you.”

“I know. I’m sorry.” She didn’t mention the picture of flowers he’d hung there yesterday. Why add more fuel to the fire? He already suspected she was losing her marbles.

“Is that the only reason you were upset last night?”

Denise debated whether to tell him or not. It wasn’t as if she had any loyalty to Pamela and Kelly. Besides, Connor had a right to know what people were saying about them behind their backs.

She brought her coffee to the table and sat. “I’m not comfortable around Pamela.”

Connor joined her at the table. “Oh?”

Denise decided to tell him everything. “Remember when I went to the restroom at the anniversary party?

He gave her a questioning look. “Yeah?”

She took a deep breath. “Well, I overheard Pamela and Kelly saying some nasty things.”

Connor’s voice bristled. “Saying what?”

Denise took a long sip of her coffee, working up the nerve to confess all. “They said I was responsible for killing my sister. That I might have even done it on purpose. And then married you when you were on the rebound. That I planned it all.” There, she got it all out in one breath.

Connor pounded a fist on the table, making her cup rattle and spilling coffee. She reached for a napkin to wipe it up while Connor stood and paced around the room.

“How dare they talk about you like that!”

Watching Connor pace, Denise wondered if telling him was the right thing to do. But it felt good to know he felt protective of her reputation. He looked genuinely angry. It made her regret her accusation of last night. Her conversation with Pamela had upset her so much, it might have triggered her hallucination of Laura’s perfume. And she’d taken it out on him. But he still leapt to her defense.

Instead of blaming him, maybe she should have told him about Pamela and Kelly last night.

“I’m firing Kelly,” he growled. “We don’t want people like that working at the company. And I don’t want to work with anyone who would talk about my wife like that.
