KID’S GOT GAME

Henry arrived early at the meeting place where the new guards were to assemble. It was a restaurant that had gone out of business and had a For Sale sign on the door. With the tables, chairs, and booths gone, what had been the dining room area was now a large open space. Alex Bergman had bought the property after it was foreclosed on. He had plans to renovate it and sell it for a profit. The restaurant had served seafood for over a decade; a slight scent of cooked fish lingered in the air.

There were three other new guards already there when Henry arrived. Greeting them at the door was Donahue and four of the guards from Driftwood Island. Donahue looked taller than he had in the two photos Henry had seen of him, and his blond hair was worn short.

The established guards and the new men worked for the same company, Defcon Security, and most of them already knew each other. The other new guards showed up on time and Donahue addressed the gathering as they stood in a semicircle before him.

“I know you were told that you would be staying on Driftwood Island, but there’s been a change and you’ll be posted on one of the smaller islands that’s not far from where your employer lives.”

One of the men spoke up. He was forty, tall, muscular, and had a shaved head with a bushy red beard. An arrogant scowl seemed to be his perpetual expression. Henry had heard him referred to as Mason.

“I’m not going to sleep in some damn tent.”

“It won’t be a tent,” Donahue said. “There are trailers on the island. They have propane and are hooked up to generators.”

“And how dangerous will it be?” Mason asked.

“There are people who want your employer dead. They won’t mind killing you to get to him. If that scares you, then leave now.”

Mason huffed. “Nothing scares me. But I’d feel better about things if you weren’t hiring guys who had no experience.”

“I was assured you all had experience and were ready to face anything.”

To Henry’s surprise, Mason pointed at him. “There’s no way that guy is experienced. Beard or no beard, he looks damn young.”

“Worry about yourself,” Henry told him.

Mason cocked his head and grinned. “Are you talking back to me, boy?”

“I don’t give a shit about you. I’m here to do a job and get paid.”

Mason looked around the room at the other men. He had worked with many of them before, and some were his friends.

“This kid is looking for an ass whupping.”

A few of the men laughed, and several gave knowing nods. They were aware that Mason was a bully who liked to intimidate those he deemed weaker than himself. It wasn’t surprising that he would choose young Henry to be his newest victim.

One of the other men, Sanchez, called over to Henry. “I know you think you’re tough, kid, but you don’t want to mess with Mason.”

Henry didn’t want to mess with Mason.
