Chapter 14
The girls cycled for almost an hour, switching positions on the bikes, taking turns at steering, and stopping a few times for short rests along the roadway. Except for Alexa. She said she wasnât the best cyclist, so Greta pedaled their bike for them both. They werenât very sure of where they were heading to; after all, nothing was planned. The girls had had no idea when they woke up that morning that it would turn into the day they would regain their freedom. It could also have turned out very differently and indeed, so much worse for them all.
The four girls had come so close to being killed in the bombing raid that the day was a godsend, a real blessing, and each felt as though they had a protective force around them, keeping them safe and shielding them from harm. Alexa was convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that her God had indeed heard her prayer the night before and had acted on their behalf. Her faith was already strong; however, this anchored it and made it even firmer.
As they cycled along the uneven roads, the four girls passed many damaged buildings, many of which had no doubt been intentionally bombed and targeted specifically by the Allied forces in air raids. However, it was obvious that many homes had been unintentionally caught up in the air strikes, with many structures left derelict and abandoned in a severe state of disrepair. There didnât appear to be many people around in the area they travelled through. It seemed more like a ghost town, totally deserted and deadly silent.
Henrietta and Martaâs bicycle got a flat tire, so the four girls stopped on the open roadway and took the opportunity to rest a little. They had no supplies with them, nothing to eat or drink, and hadnât had anything since early that morning when they had eaten breakfast at the convent. Greta suggested they rummage around some of the abandoned damaged houses in the hope of finding some kind of nourishment. Although they werenât too enthusiastic at the prospect of searching through the dangerous structures, they agreed they had no other options.
About two hundred yards ahead of them, they saw a large house that had received extensive bomb damage. Part of its roof had been blown off, several windows were blown out, and part of the exterior wall on its right side had collapsed. The girls approached the house cautiously. Henrietta suggested she and Marta look around the back of the property towards the garden, while Greta and Alexa take the front side.
Alexa and Greta carefully began to climb up the mound of rubble where they thought there might have once been a doorway, to try and find a way inside the house. Greta was first to reach the top of the brick pile, with Alexa following close behind her. Greta turned around to extend a helping hand to her friend. Alexa, looking up at Greta, saw her eyes widen with shock.
