GOD’S INSTRUCTIONS MAKE NO SENSE

Quite often, we respond to God’s whispers by saying, “What? You’ve got to be kidding.” We have to remember that God is omniscient—He sees the beginning and the end, and He knows how every detail will fit together in His grand plan. Mountain climbers understand that sometimes to make progress up a cliff, they first have to go downward to access a better path. Before they begin, they carefully map out their route so there are no surprises. However, God seldom provides us with detailed maps. We have to trust that He knows exactly what direction we need to go and that He will provide clear instructions as they are needed. Sometimes when we’re trying to climb He sends us in a direction that appears to be backwards, or to the base of a cliff, or into a cave. Only with confidence in our wise and loving King will we respond in faith when we don’t understand His directives.

In the pages of Scripture, we see what can happen when men and women respond to God’s strange directions:

•Moses led his people to the edge of a sea where they were defenseless against Pharaoh’s army, but God miraculously opened the sea to let them escape.

•God reduced Gideon’s army from 32,000 to 300 before a decisive battle.

•David fought a giant with only a slingshot.

•Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego trusted God as they were thrown into a flaming furnace.

•Joseph believed Mary was honest when she told him the Holy Spirit had made her pregnant.

•Jesus knew the only hope for mankind was a seemingly tragic and senseless death.
