The engine roars as the truck accelerates onto Interstate 40 West. We’re on our way to the Lava Tubes in Southern California. The good news is, the truck runs like a dream. The engine is well-tuned, so although it’s loud, the rhythm is mellow and smooth. The comfortable, roomy interior isn’t bad either.

The bad news is, Dru’s need for rest, as a result of the cleanse, is kicking in.

We’re still close enough to Oklahoma City to be in range of decent radio stations and ordinarily, Dru would sing along with the radio. But, when a hip-hop song we both like plays, he turns it off and whines! “Not in the mood.”

I cross my arms and set my jaw. “Okay, that’s it. Cranky 3-year-old is not look good look on you. My turn to drive.”

“Not yet! I love driving this truck,” he grumbles.

“You can drive after you take a nap,” I say.

Reluctantly he agrees, albeit after quite a bit more grumbling. “Fine!”

Dru pulls to the side of the road and we switch spots. He reclines, getting comfy with the travel pillow and throw that our new friends have left in the back seat for us. Dru’s out like a light before I’ve even accelerated onto the highway.
