TWENTY ONE

I’m still weirded out by the time I arrive back in Harlow—so much so, that the first thing I do when I’m inside is to make sure all the doors and windows are locked and the plywood is still in place. Levi’s awake and wanting a bottle, and I pace nervously as the electric kettle heats, repeatedly calling Josh’s cell with no luck. When I call Yanes main line and the receptionist tells me he left an hour ago, I don’t know what to think, especially when I track his phone and receive “no location found.” What I’m not going to do is jump to conclusions, because his lack of GPS could be anything from a turned off phone to a dead battery . . . even though Josh always has his cell on and near him, and he charges it every night, whether it’s at eighty percent battery life, or twenty percent. Since Lily’s death, I can honestly count on one hand the times I haven’t been able to get a hold of him when I tried, but I will sit tight and wait, because there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation why he isn’t answering—

I perk up as I hear the crunch of gravel in our driveway.

Finally.

I hurry into the kitchen and look out the window . . . and my heart stops when I see the front end of Jessie’s truck. She’s already out the driver’s side door, and I shrink back against the sound of her footsteps. It can’t be a coincidence that Jessie’s here after my phone call with Mia, but it has to be. Do I really think Jessie’s come to take Levi from me? Even before talking to Mia, it’s clear Jessie has issues, but outside of some bizarre comments and having the gun—which she explained—Jessie’s given no indication of being dangerous . . . but what if I’m wrong? What if Jessie knows what Mia told me, and now Jessie feels she has no choice but to make her move?

The doorbell rings.

I can see the blurred outline of Jessie’s head through the privacy glass. The living room curtains are open, and if she takes two steps sideways and looks inside, she’s going to see me standing here, gawking. I snatch Levi’s carrier and start for the bedroom before realizing those curtains are open as well, then detour into the bathroom, quietly shutting the door behind me. Levi makes a sound and I slip his pacifier into his mouth, thanking God the kettle has an automatic shutoff, and knowing Jessie will leave within a few minutes when I don’t answer the door. I’m not being paranoid; I just don’t want to talk to anyone right now. It’s not that odd, and it’s not like this is the first time I’ve avoided answering a door. Neighbors were always knocking at the condo—wanting to borrow something, or soliciting for their kid’s fundraiser—and more than once, we had Jehovah’s Witnesses loose in the hallways. There’s no rule
